Nosa Señora do Corpiño

Lalín (Pontevedra)

In the skirt of Mount Carrio, on the Deza valley, the shrine of Nosa Señora do Corpiño is one of the most famous of Galicia for its San Juan Romeria, linked to the release of evils and "meigallos."

Place: Corpiño, Lalín, Pontevedra
Sanctuary: Sanctuary of Nosa Señora do Corpiño
Party: 23-24 June (San Juan)
Rasgo: release of evils

Origin and history

The tradition places the origins in the High Middle Ages, with a penitent hermit on Mount Carrio, and in an apparition of the Virgin to some pastoral children who were refugees from a storm in the ruins of a hermitage of San Adrián; a light would have pointed out a cave with the tomb of the saint, from which the name "O Corpiño" would come. These stories are pious tradition.

The sanctuary, one of the oldest and most frequented in Galicia, has its current architecture from the XVIII- 19th century. Its most well-known feature is the Romeria of June 23-24, around San Juan, which is called for the release of diseases and evils attributed to spells; in this sanctuary, exorcisms have been made in recent times, bringing together thousands of pilgrims.

"Nosa Señora do Corpiño, a bookseller of all evil, pray for us."
