Origin and history

La local tradition de Nuestra Señora del Espejo en Mérida (Venezuela) refers that the Virgin manifested herself in a small mirror to a peasant, a story that explains the popular origin of the advocation and its unique name. In the same traditional line, the main party was held of ancient the day of the Holy Kingsand later also links with the 2 February, a date that today appears associated with its commemoration in local devotion; however, there is not enough critical historical documentation here to safely set the first episode or its exact chronology.

La documented history accessible in the sources consulted is rather fragmented. It is clear that the temple of Our Lady of El Espejo was an important religious center in Merida and that there began the remarkable Society Our Lady of Carmen, founded in 1851, which confirms the antiquity and relevance of the cult in the 19th century. It is also presented in recent press as a Marian advocation of Merida, but without these notes providing archiving details about the primitive origin of the image or of the foundational tradition.

The image and the sanctuary

The venerated image is a painting on a face of likely translucent rock crystal, also described as a natural polished quartz glass; hence the popular name of “Virgen del Espejo”. This material peculiarity distinguishes the advocation within local Marian representations, although in the revised sources there is no more precise iconographic description of garments, attributes or restorations.

The image is currently being venerated in the Rectory Our Lady of the Mirror in Merida, identified in recent dissemination as a National historical monument and cultural heritage of the city. In the sources consulted, it is not clear that the temple has the rank of the lower basilica, national sanctuary or diocesan sanctuary; therefore, it should be simply stated as rectory / temple of Our Lady of the Mirror.

Sponsorship and coronation

In the popular meridian piety, Our Lady of the Mirror is presented as patron of the city of Mérida, Venezuela. It is also described as one of the most significant Marian devotions of the archdiocese, but the available sources do not make it possible to specify with documentary rigour whether there is a formal decree of municipal, diocesan or archdiocesan patronage; therefore, it should be stated that its patronage is recognized in tradition and popular pietynot necessarily with the same degree of legal formalization in the revised sources.

On the canonical coronationin the sources consulted does not contain a documented canonical coronation. If it existed at the local level, it is not sufficiently corroborated in the materials revised for a rigorous sheet.

Party and devotion

La main party is associated in the ancient tradition of 6 January, Day of the Holy Kingsbut local devotion is also celebrated by the 2 February, date today widely linked to the advocation. Since the sources do not explain precisely the transfer or coexistence of both dates, it should be noted that the documentation consulted does not allow for the safe establishment of a single original celebration.

Devotion retains features of meridean popular piety and a strong identification with the city. Recent news shows that the advocation continues to summon faithful around their temple in Merida, although no reliable figures of influx or statistical data of pilgrimage are provided; therefore, these extremes no constan in the revised documentation.

Link to the Rosary

In the sources consulted does not contain a specific and documented historical link between Our Lady of the Mirror and a practice of the Rosary distinct from the general Marian devotion. However, as in so many local advocates, the Rosary This Marian piety naturally accompanies: to meditate on the mysteries of Christ with Mary allows us to contemplate, in the light of the Incarnation and the glory of the Virgin, the spiritual sense of an image venerated by the community.
