Marian devotion
Our Lady of Fresno
On the Primitiva Road · Degree (Asturias)
On a hill between the Nalón and the Narcea, on the Primitiva Road of Santiago, the shrine of Our Lady of Fresno is one of the most visited in the centre of Asturias, famous for its novenary of San Miguel.
Origin and history
The present sanctuary is a building of the XV-XVI centuries, with subsequent Baroque reforms, on a hill of the "Party of the Montes," on the Primitiva Road. Some historians place the origins in the 9th century, with a first altomedieval church, although it is historiographic tradition rather than documented data. The original image disappeared in the looting of 1936; the present one is a cedar size made in Madrid in 1975.
The devotion is especially expressed in the Noviary of San Miguel (September 21-29) and in the Romeries of September 8 and 28, with great communal participation. Despite its demanding access, it is one of the most visited Marian shrines in the central area of Asturias.
Official patronage and canonical coronation: no record.
