Main data
Origin and history
El Kahlenberg is a 484 m hill located in the Wienerwald (Vienna Forest), one of the most famous sights on the city of Vienna. Historically he became famous for his relationship with the liberation of Vienna in 1683, when King John III Sobieski of Poland launched from there the decisive counter-attack against the Ottoman army during the Second Vienna Site. This historical memory has marked the religious character of the place, associated with the protection of the Virgin Mary over the city and Christianity.
At the top of the Kahlenberg is today the iglesia de San José (St. Josefskirche am Kahlenberg)which is a known place of pilgrimage and veneration for the Viennese. In its interior is venerated a image of the Virgin Mary of dark complexion, popularly called "Black Virgin," to which many faithful attribute great devotion. This Marian devotion, although linked to the temple of St. Joseph, is in fact identified with the Our Lady of the Kahlenberg, that is, the Virgin venerated in this high place over Vienna.
As for the distinction between tradition / legend and documented history:
– Es documented history la importancia militar y simbólica del Kahlenberg en la batalla de 1683 y su condición actual de mirador emblemático y lugar de visita frecuente. – Es religious tradition (not necessarily documented in a specific official act) the reading of the triumph of 1683 as a victory attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary and the consequent consolidation of a Marian cult of gratitude in the area. Catholic sources on the Vienna site underline the "Marian" character of that victory and the protagonism of the Name of Mary in the later memory, but do not detail a specific decree formally instituting an advocation "Our Lady of the Kahlenberg."
It does not contain, in the sources consulted, a explicit foundation of the advocation with date and the pontifical document itself; the advocation is linked rather to the place, to the Marian temple in height and to the Marian reading of the history of 1683.
The image and the sanctuary
En la iglesia de San José en el Kahlenberg (St. Josefskirche Kahlenberg) se venera una Images of the Virgen Negra. The available sources of tourist outreach describe the image as a "Black Virgin" of great veneration, but do not specify with certainty the material, author or date of realization. There is also no detailed technical-iconographic description in these sources (type of size or painting, style, art school); therefore, these data no constan for sure.
The church is known as St. Josefskirche am Kahlenberg, located on the top of the hill, and is recognized as site of pilgrimage and veneration for the inhabitants of Vienna. Its importance is due to both the religious dimension (masses, pilgrimages, Marian devotion) and the symbolic value of the place, associated with the defense of Vienna in 1683 and the panoramic view over the city. It is not indicated in the sources consulted that the church has the title of minor basilicaor that it is officially recognized as National sanctuary; therefore, at more precise canonical level no consta an official definition of this type.
What is clear is that the Kahlenberg It has become a place of strong spiritual and patriotic significance, and the presence of the Black Virgin in the church of St. Joseph has consolidated the Marian identity of the site.
Sponsorship and coronation
Public sources consulted do not indicate that the Virgin venerated in the Kahlenberg has been proclaimed Official pattern of the city of Vienna, the Land of Vienna or Austria. Austria has a strong Marian tradition linked, among others, to the shrine of Mariazell, considered a great Marian national centre, while the Kahlenberg is presented above all as a emblematic place of historical memory and devotion, rather than as canonically defined patronage.
About a possible canonical coronation of the image of the Black Virgin of the Kahlenberg (with decree of the Holy See, date and authority pontifical or delegate):
– En las fuentes consultadas (páginas informativas sobre Kahlenberg, recursos turísticos, artículos marianos y documentos eclesiales disponibles en línea) does not contain a documented canonical coronation for this image.
Therefore, following the requested criterion:
Canon coronation: there is no documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
In the easily accessible documentation, no Fecha liturgica propia universally recognized as the "Feast of Our Lady of the Kahlenberg." In contrast, Marian memory linked to the Vienna site is often associated with the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, established following the victory of 1683 and extended to the universal Church by Pope Innocent XI, held 12 September. This party, although not exclusive to the Kahlenberg, has a strong historical resonance in Austria as a thanksgiving for the liberation of Vienna.
As for the concrete devotional practice in the Kahlenberg:
– Se menciona la pilgrimage and veneration in the church of St. Joseph, where the faithful come to pray before the Black Virgin. – La colina es uno de los destinos más populares para visitantes y excursionistas por su vista sobre Viena, lo que facilita también una afluencia significativa de personas al templo, aun cuando las cifras exactas de peregrinos no constan in the sources consulted.
It is reasonable to place the highest devotional intensity around the General Marian parties (like the Name of Mary on 12 September and other Marian solemnities of the calendar), which in Austria have a special highlight, but the specific documentation on own processions or specific traditions of the Kahlenberg (for example, formally established annual romaneries) no consta Precisely.
Link to the Rosary
No explicit reference has been found in the sources consulted on a the Rosary o a un specific institutional link between the advocation of the Virgin of the Kahlenberg and the prayer of the Rosary (for example, own indulgences, canonical decrees or specific festivals of the Rosary in that sanctuary). Therefore:
– Specific relationship with the Rosary: is not documented.
However, the historical and spiritual context of the Kahlenberg suggests a natural connection with the spirituality of the Rosary:
Thus, even if there is no legal-liturgical link formally established between "Our Lady of the Kahlenberg" and the Rosary, Marian devotion lived in that high sanctuary over Vienna finds in the Rosary a particularly appropriate form of prayer: meditation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary, a plea entrusted to the Black Virgin, and thanksgiving for maternal protection in the history of the city and Austria.

Pray Hail MaryDocumented expansion: the venerated images in San José del Kahlenberg
The tab of the place must distinguish two Marian references that live together in the church of San José. The diocese of Vienna describes the Madonna from Kahlenberg as a copy of the image of the Most Holy Name of Mary that Pope Innocent XI would have given to the Roman church linked to the memory of the battle. In a furnace located next to the left side altar is also venerated a copy of the Black Virgin of Częstochowafrom the tradition of the Polish sanctuary.
Therefore, the copy of Częstochowa mentioned in the research does not constitute a second apparition or an advocation with its own supernatural record: it is a venerated image within the very temple of San José. The historical relationship between Sobieski, Częstochowa and the liberation of Vienna is part of the religious and political memory of 1683; it is not possible to say that the decisive mass was celebrated in the face of this concrete copy. The Austrian investigation maintains this issue as a historical uncertainty and places the debate between Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg.
The presence of both images explains that the place can be read both as a historical memory, a church of pilgrimage and a space of Catholic devotion. The veneration of images refers to Mary and to the intercession that the faithful ask of her; worship corresponds only to God.
