Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Lledó
Mare de Déu del Lledó · Patrona de Castellón
Walled next to an almez (in Valencian, lledoner), the small image of the Mare de Déu del Lledó is the very dear patron of Castellón de la Plana and its orchard.
Origin and history
Tradition tells that a farmer, Perot de Granyana, found the small image while plowing the field, next to a lledoner (almez), a tree that gives name to the advocation. The find is located in the Middle Ages; in the place was raised a hermitage around which the cult was growing.
Over the centuries, the primitive sanctuary gave way to the present basilica. Castellón went to the Virgin in droughts, epidemics and conflicts, consolidating his patronage. The canonical coronation of 1924 reaffirmed the antiquity and importance of this devotion.
