Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Sea
Patrona de Almería
The Virgin of the Sea has been the patron and protector of Almería and its people of the sea for centuries.
Origin and history
According to tradition, on December 21, 1502, fishermen found on the beach of Torregarcía an image of the late Gothic Virgin that the sea had deposited in the sand. The finding was interpreted as a sign of predilection towards the city, and was soon attributed numerous favors.
The image was moved to Almería, to a temple that eventually became the present sanctuary, entrusted to the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). In 1806 Pope Pius VII proclaimed her patron of Almería, and in 1951 she was crowned canonically. His Romeria to Torregarcía remembers the place of apparition.
