Our Lady of El Pueyo
Barbastro (Huesca)
On a hill that dominates the Somontano, the holy monastery of Our Lady of El Pueyo guards the patron of Barbastro, bound by tradition to the appearance of a shepherd in 1101.
Origin and history
The pious tradition tells that in 1101 the pastor Balanarán, from Morilla de Ilche, saw glow in an almond on the hill of Pueyo, where the Virgin appeared to him asking for a chapel. The first historical document of the sanctuary is 1251, when James I establishes his chaplaincy.
Since the Middle Ages it is a pilgrimage center of Barbastro. Worked by Benedictine from 1889 - eighteen of them martyred in 1936 - then by Claretians (1962-2009) and today by the Institute of the Incarnate Word. Barbastro Patroness and secondary Patroness of the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón, with Romeria on Easter Monday and parties around September 8.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
