Our Lady of the Remedy
Patrona de Alicante
Patroness of the city of Alicante, Our Lady of the Remedia receives worship in the Concathedral of San Nicolás, with a devotion documented since the 16th century and very linked to the civic life of the city.
Origin and history
The first news of the cult is located in 1535, when there were processions in its honor; towards the end of the 16th century a fellowship was organized, canonically approved in 1603. The primitive image received worship on an altar of the cloister of the current Concathedral of San Nicolás.
Local tradition links the rise of devotion to the 1648 epidemic, after which cures were attributed to its intercession. Patrona de Alicante, was received by the City Council in 1950 with the insignia of Alcaldessa Honoraria and Perpetua, and his cult is concentrated in the parties of August.
