Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Likuni
Place: Likuni, Lilongüe district, Central region, Malawi
Parish Foundation: 1902
Marian party: October 7, Our Lady of the Rosary.
In Likuni, on the western outskirts of Lilongüe, the advocation of the Rosary is not a name added from afar. The archdiocese itself identifies the parish as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – LikuniOur Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, and set her foundation in 1902. It is the oldest parish in its current directory and gives name to one of its decanates.
An ancient root of the Church in Malawi
The history of Likuni is linked to the first stable steps of Catholic evangelization in the central region of Malawi. The community was born at a time when the distances were large, the means scarce and the missionary presence was sustained through travel, schools, dispensaries and small Christian communities. The date of 1902 does not turn the parish into a relic: it points to a continuity of prayer and service that has passed through generations.
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi recalls that the ecclesiastical territory that would give rise to the present archdiocese was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Likuni in 1951. He then took the name Lilongüe and, in time, was raised to the Metropolitan Archdiocese. Thus, the name of this humble town was inscribed in the institutional history of the local Church.
The first cathedral and a new stage
The Archdiocese of Lilongüe states that Likuni was the historic site of its first cathedral, dated 1903. In 2022 Archbishop George Desmond Tambala announced the transfer of the new cathedral project from Matula to Likuni, where there is sufficient land for the temple, offices, parking and a future sanctuary. The news once again links the present of the Archdiocese to its place of origin.
It is appropriate to express it precisely: the announcement of a project and the history of the first cathedral do not mean that everything planned is already finished. This document retains the date and scope of the official communiqué without turning a pastoral intention into a completed work.
A living parish
Recent ecclesial news shows an active community. In January 2025, during a special Mass for the parish leaders elected for the period 2025-2027, the parish priest called for a service marked by dedication, love for the Church and the search for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The historical continuity of Likuni is therefore recognized in specific people who agree to take care of their small Christian communities.
The parish also maintains a youth organization and a tradition of communication and training linked to Likuni Press. In this context, the Rosary should not be understood as an isolated devotion to life: it accompanies the listening to the Word, the celebration of the Eucharist, education in faith and commitment to others.
Mary leads to Christ
Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary looks with the Church at the mysteries of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each ten makes a memory of the Gospel and educates the heart in patient care. In a community that has known more than a century of change, the repeated rhythm of the Hail Mary expresses perseverance: the faith received is again given to the next generation.
Likuni does not appear as a place of Marian apparition. Its uniqueness is historical and pastoral: a parish dedicated to the Rosary from the beginning of the local Church, ancient cathedralicia and community called to continue to grow around the Eucharist.
