Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Saguenay
Marian vocation of Saguenay (Quebec)
Recognized by the Church
In the Saguenay fjord region (Quebec, Canada) there are tourist and heritage references to a great statue of the Virgin Mary on a cliff, generally related to protection of navigators of the fjord and the river, but is not documented in ecclesial sources of easy access as a specific Marian vocation with a liturgical cult of its own or as a Marian sanctuary recognized at the diocesan or national level. It is not clear that this title is included in regular lists of Marian advocations or in repertories of Marian sanctuaries from Canada or Colombia.
Main data
Origin and history
In the Saguenay fjord region (Quebec, Canada) there are tourist and heritage references to a great statue of the Virgin Mary on a cliff, generally related to protection of navigators of the fjord and the river, but is not documented in ecclesial sources of easy access as a specific Marian vocation with a liturgical cult of its own or as a Marian sanctuary recognized at the diocesan or national level. It is not clear that this title is included in regular lists of Marian advocations or in repertories of Marian sanctuaries from Canada or Colombia.
The case link with Colombia (mention of "Saguenay, department of Quebec, Colombia"), does not contain in administrative maps or in ecclesial documentation the existence of a Colombian municipality or department with that name, or of a parish or sanctuary officially dedicated to "Nuestra Señora del Saguenay." No references have been found in databases on Marian advocates in Colombia, neither in devotional repertories, nor in Catholic publications consulted. The connection with Colombia should therefore be considered, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, as a possible geographical identification error or a very local tradition not publicly documented.
No Marian apparition, private revelation or a historically accredited miraculous fact that has given rise to this advocation under the usual criteria of the Church (diocesan approval, documentation in decrees, historical studies, etc.). As a result, the information available is more in the field of local popular devotion (Canada) and of the oral tradition that in that of an official advocation in a strict sense.
The image and the sanctuary
It is attested to in tourist and heritage sources (not specifically ecclesial) than in the fjord del Saguenay (Quebec) there is a imagen monumental de la Virgen erected on the top of a cliff, visible from the river route, with a protective sense for the sailors. However, the sources consulted do not provide accurate and verifiable data on:
– Author y exact date de erección de la estatua. – Material (stone, metal or other) and technical de realización. – Detailed Iconography (if it is a Virgin with Child, Immaculate, Stella Maris, etc.).
There is no evidence of a Canonically erected Marian sanctuary in the form of a basilica, national or diocesan sanctuary directly associated with this image in a way recognized by the local Church. No reference has been found to:
– Declaración de minor basilica. – Título de National sanctuary o diocesan sanctuary. – Reconocimiento oficial en directorios de santuarios de la Iglesia en Canadá o en Colombia.
In practice, image works as a place of visit and popular pilgrimageespecially for those who sail the fjord or travel the area, but there is no temple formally recognized by the ecclesiastical authority as Marian sanctuary under the title "Our Lady of the Saguenay."
Sponsorship and coronation
No consta que Our Lady of the Saguenay has been officially proclaimed patron of a diocese, city, municipality or nation by Pontifical or Episcopal decree, unlike other Marian asvocations whose patronage is clearly documented.
As for the canonical coronation, no registration is found in:
– Decretos vaticanos publicados. – Comunicados diocesanos accesibles públicamente. – Noticias en prensa católica o repertorios de santuarios.
Therefore, following the criteria for unsafe data:
There is no documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
No one found a fecha de fiesta litúrgica propia of "Our Lady of the Saguenay" in official calendars (universal, national or diocesan), liturgical books or directories of Marian celebrations. When mentioned, it is usually done in a broad Marian devotional context, or as a cultural and tourist reference to the presence of the Virgin in the fjord, without specifying mandatory or optional memory in the calendar.
It can be said, with caution, that there is a local devotional appreciation for this monumental image as:
– Protector of navigators del fiordo. – Signo visible de la presence of Mary on the imposing geography of the region.
No official data on inflow of pilgrims, no statistics of religious visits different from tourism, no clearly established liturgical traditions (fixed processions, novies approved, etc.). The expressions of piety seem to be spontaneous: visits, private prayers and, occasionally, Marian celebrations organized by local parishes, although without stable documentation that allows them to be described with precision.
Link to the Rosary
No consta un specific link between the title of "Our Lady of the Saguenay" and the rezo of the Holy Rosary (for example, the Rosary's cofradies erected there, particular indulgences, or a Marian feast linked to the Rosary as such).
However, from a general Marian perspective, the Rosary is the most widespread form of Marian prayer in the Church and usually accompanies devotion to any image of the Virgin, even where a particular tradition has not developed. The Rosary:
– Permite meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life with Mary, lo que integra cualquier advocación local en el gran marco de la fe de la Iglesia. – Ofrece un modo sencillo y profundo de entrust to the protection of the Virgin la vida cotidiana, los viajes, y en este caso, la seguridad de los navegantes y de quienes viven o trabajan en torno al fiordo. – Une la devoción local a la comunión universal of the faithful who pray the Rosary throughout the world.
For this reason, even if there is no specific historical link documented, it is fully consistent that those who come to the image of Our Lady of Saguenay - or consider this advocation in a spiritual way - use the Holy Rosary as a privileged form of prayer, intercession and contemplation of the mysteries of Christ in the company of Mary.
