Origin and history

The sanctuary was born as a great monument to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, defined in 1854. On June 14, 1863, the first stone was placed on the initiative of Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva, vicar of Braga. The complex developed progressively: staircase, basilica, crypt, park and houses for pilgrims.

The main image was sculpted in Rome and enthroned in 1880. At the beginning of the 20th century Sameiro was the largest Marian pilgrimage place in Portugal, before the world irradiation of Fatima; today it is the second. In 1904 he received a gold crown offered by the women of Portugal and Queen Doña Amelia. In 2004 John Paul II granted him the Golden Rose. The sources emphasize that the Virgin did not appear here: it is a sanctuary born of devotion to the Immaculate.

"Immaculate of the Sameiro, all pure, pray for us."
