Origin and history
La Capilla de Notre-Dame du Scex is "hanging" on the rock, on the town of Saint-Maurice, in the canton of the Valais (Switzerland), dominating the Rhone Valley. The proximity of the abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaunefounded in 515 on the tomb of Saint Mauritius and its fellow martyrs, it provides the spiritual and historical context: it is an area of ancient and continuous Christian tradition and pilgrimage.
Documented history: The tourist and hiking sources describe the chapel of Notre-Dame du Scex as a small Marian sanctuary attached to the rocky wall, accessible by a steep road and stairs, traditionally used as a place of local recollection and pilgrimage. However, in regularly accessible documentation (tourism, pilgrimage guides, religious press and regular databases) no precise dates of foundation, no detailed historical account of the erection of the chapel, of its restorations or of possible miraculous events clearly documented.
Tradition / legend: the popular piety of the Valais considers this place a Marian shelter in the mountainassociated with prayers of protection over the valley and the communities of the region. It is presented as a sanctuary "hung on the rock," with penitential access, which invites the silence, contemplation and intercession of the Virgin for the needs of the diocese and pilgrims. However, in the verifiable sources consulted no detailed specific legends are found (apparitions, concrete miracles, prodigious foundations); beyond this devotional perception, no consta a legendary tradition well established in the texts.
The image and the sanctuary
The available sources focus on the location of the chapel, more than in a detailed description of the venerated image. It is indicated that this is the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Scex, small chapel attached to the rock on Saint- Maurice, visible from the valley and accessible only on foot by a steep path and stairs. The chapel is integrated into the rocky wall, giving the impression of being literally "suspended" on the cliff.
As for the image of the Virgin, the sources consulted (tourism and general) do not provide verifiable data sobre: – tipo de imagen (escultura, pintura mural, retablo, etc.); – material (madera, piedra, lienzo, etc.); – detalles iconográficos (Niño Jesús en brazos, atributos particulares, coronas, etc.).
Therefore, no con seguridad the iconographic description of the holder image of Notre-Dame du Scex in accessible sources.
Concerning canonical status of the temple, the chapel is simply mentioned as "Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Scex," without indication of special rank. Not listed as minor basilicaor National sanctuarynor has there been any explicit reference to formal recognition as diocesan sanctuary, although in practice it performs devotional functions specific to a small local Marian sanctuary.
Sponsorship and coronation
El patronazgo de Our Lady of the Scex is primarily linked to the town of Saint-Maurice and the environment of Valaisas a place of Marian pilgrimage of reach, especially regional. The sources managed present it as a point of prayer and visit for the inhabitants of the valley and for walkers and pilgrims who travel the area, in relation also to the abbey of SaintMaurice.
No references to a Official patronage (by decree) on the municipality, canton or diocese; therefore, from a strictly documented point of view, does not contain a canonically proclaimed patronage de Notre-Dame du Scex on a broader civil or ecclesial level.
Party and devotion
The available sources do not explicitly indicate a Fecha liturgica propia de Notre-Dame du Scex in the diocesan calendar of the Valais. Therefore, in accessible documentation does not contain a specific main party linked to this advocation beyond the great general Marian solemnities (such as the Assumption or the Nativity of the Virgin).
La devoción se manifiesta sobre todo a través de: – la peregrinación a pie por el sendero empinado que asciende desde Saint-Maurice hasta la capilla, descrita como experiencia de esfuerzo físico y recogimiento espiritual; – el place of silence and contemplationin a landscape of rock and forest above the valley.
The route and visit description platforms point to the chapel as a classic objective of excursion and devotional visit from Saint- Maurice. However, the sources consulted do not provide inflow figuresor describe in a detailed way specific processions, popular vows or specific ritual traditions (for example, particular blessings, agricultural begging or unique patrons). Therefore, beyond the obvious devotional use, do not contain quantitative data or very precise traditions in easily accessible documentation.
Link to the Rosary
In direct relation to the prayer of the Rosary, the sources consulted about Notre-Dame du Scex do not specifically mention: – cofradías del Rosario erigidas en la capilla; – horarios estables de rosarios comunitarios; – indulgencias particulares vinculadas al rezo del Rosario en este santuario.
Therefore, from a strictly documentary point of view, does not contain a specific and formal link with the Rosary.
However, the nature of Marian sanctuary in height, achieved through a demanding path, fits very well with the spiritual experience of Rosary as a "way" of contemplating the mysteries of Christ with Mary. La subida a la capilla —entre esfuerzo, silencio y vistas sobre el valle— puede vivirse como símbolo del itinerario interior que el Rosario propone: – en los joyful mysteries, la acogida de la encarnación de Cristo en la vida cotidiana de las familias del Valais; – en los painful mysteries, la unión a la cruz del Señor ante las pruebas, trabajos y sufrimientos que marcan la historia de estas tierras de montaña; – en los glorious and luminous mysteriesthe hope of the new life and the light of Christ on the Church that pilgrims from the historic abbey of Saint- Maurice to eternity.
This way, though there is no specific rosarian tradition documented for Notre-Dame du Scex, the Rosary is presented as a privileged form of prayer to accompany the visit to this chapel "hanging on the rock," uniting the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with the intercession of Mary by the Church and by the communities of the Valais.
