Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Valley
Reina de Oriente · Venezuela
From the island of Margarita, the Virgin of the Valley is the great Mother of the Venezuelan East, especially loved by the fishermen and the people of the sea.
Origin and history
The invocation was born in the east of Venezuela from an ancient Marian image taken to the region in the early times of evangelization. The devotion was consolidated in the Valley of the Holy Spirit, in Margarita, with numerous favors attributed to its intercession, especially the protection of fishermen and the people of the sea.
In the face of the extension of the cult, the ecclesiastical authorities called for the canonical coronation of the image, granted by Saint Pius X in 1910 and solemnly held on September 8, 1911. Since then, the feast of 8 September brings together every year a multitude of pilgrims, who venerate it as "Queen of the East."
