Origin and history
La advocación de la Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbal is linked to the development of Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbalat the summit of the hill of the same name, in Santiago de Chile, today integrated into the Metropolitan Park of Santiago. This devotion was born in the early 20th century, in the context of the strong popular roots of the dogma of the Immaculate (proclaimed in 1854) and the desire to have a great Marian sign visible on the city.
According to the documented historythe first stone of the sanctuary was placed 8 December 1904the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, on a pilgrimage that left from the Cathedral of Santiago to the hill. The image was commissioned to a French foundry, sculpted in Paris, and the official opening of the sanctuary took place at 26 April 1908when the image of Mary Immaculate was blessed, the fruit of the economic collaboration of the Chilean people.
As regards traditions and legends, various devotional sources point out that the people of Santiago saw in this statue a protective "mantle" over the city, and that the presence of the Virgin at the summit would have been desired since ancient as a sign of Marian consecration of the capital. These elements fall within the scope of spiritual interpretation and popular pietyand are not recorded as verifiable historical facts with specific dates or documents.
> Important note: although the statement mentions "Santiago, department of Metropolitan Region, Colombia," all the sources consulted place this sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbal in Santiago de Chile, Santiago Metropolitan Region. There is no equivalent sanctuary in a "Cerro San Cristóbal" in Santiago, Colombia, with this great image of 1908.
The image and the sanctuary
The image is a great monumental sculpture of the Immaculate Conception, classic style, located on the top of Mount San Cristóbal, about 863 meters above sea level. It was sculpted in France and brought by parts for installation; it measures approximately 14 meters high and rises on a pedestal around 8-10 meters, forming a dominant set on the urban landscape. The statue is white and represents the Virgin Mary Immaculate standing, with her hands extended, serene look and welcoming attitude, according to the traditional iconography of the Immaculate (Mary without a stain of sin, associated with the text of Revelation 12). Several sources point out that it weighs in the order of several tens of tons (more than 36,000 kg), which highlights its character as a colossal monument.
The place of worship is officially called Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbal. It is a Marian sanctuary erected in the highest part of the hill, almost in the center of the city, with explanted for outdoor celebrations, a chapel at the foot of the image and spaces for silent prayer. The sanctuary is part of the Santiago Metropolitan Park and is under the jurisdiction of Archidiocesis of Santiago de Chilewhich recognizes it as one of the country's main places of Marian devotion. It does not know that it has the title of minor basilica; if it is usually referred to as sanctuary (no recognition as a national sanctuary in the documents consulted).
In this sanctuary the Eucharist and other sacraments are celebrated, and it is possible to receive baptism and marriage there, after preparation and reservation. The configuration of the place - with steps, explanades, access and viewpoints - promotes both the penitential pilgrimage and the contemplation of the city from a perspective of faith.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbal is considered a great Marian sign of the city of Santiago de Chile and a well-known religious and urban icon. The sanctuary is presented in various ecclesial and tourist organizations as one of the main centers of devotion of the Catholic Church in Chile and as "the image that presided over the sanctiaguine capital since 1908."
However, in the sources consulted does not contain a formal declaration of canonical patronage (by decree) that she officially proclaim her as a patron of the city, of the diocese or of the nation; her character as an "icon of the city" moves more in the field of devotion and popular and pastoral recognition than in that of a specific legal title.
As for a canonical coronationin the documentation available from the sanctuary itself, in the information of the archdiocese and in the historical synthesis consulted no news of a documented canonical coronation of this image by mandate of the Holy See or by episcopal decree with pontifical faculty. Therefore, according to accessible sources, does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La main party linked to this advocation is that of the Immaculate Conception, celebrada el 8 Decemberthe day on which mass pilgrimages are traditionally carried out on the hill, with special masses and liturgical acts. Since the beginning of its history, the placement of the first stone on 8 December 1904 underlines the connection of the sanctuary with this Marian solemnity.
The sanctuary is a place of constant pilgrimage throughout the year, with special intensity on Sundays, strong times of the liturgical calendar (Advent, Lent) and especially in the surroundings of the feast of December 8. He is attended by faithful and tourists, many of whom go up on foot as a gesture of penance and prayer; they can also be accessed in funicular or by road. Devotion is expressed in:
– Oración personal ante la imagen, encendido de velas y ofrecimiento de flores. – Participación en la Eucaristía, confesión y otros sacramentos. – Procesiones y peregrinaciones marianas, en particular para la solemnidad de la Inmaculada.
Various reviews describe it as a place of great influx of faithful and visitors, both for its spiritual value and for the panoramic view of Santiago it offers, which reinforces its condition as a meeting point between faith and daily life of the city.
Link to the Rosary
In the sources consulted does not include a specific and formal association between the invocation of the Immaculate Conception of the Cerro San Cristóbal and a particular brotherhood or movement of the Rosary (for example, a self-archodradia or a statutory obligation of prayer of the Rosary in the sanctuary). The pastoral center of the place is the celebration of faith, Marian devotion and the reception of pilgrims, without a "own" rosarian practice that distinguishes it from other Marian shrines.
However, as in most of the shrines of the Virgin, the Rosary It naturally accompanies devotion to the Immaculate: many pilgrims come to pray it during the climb to the hill or meditate on it, contemplating the mysteries of Christ's life with Mary. The figure of the Immaculate One, which recalls the fullness of grace with which God prepared the Mother of the Saviour, deeply harmonizes with the Rosary, an evangelical prayer centered on Christ that is traveled in the company of Mary. Thus, even if there is no specific canonical structure linked to the Rosary, this advocation offers a privileged framework for to pray the Rosary as a way of Marian conversion, contemplation and consecrationin communion with the Church and with the mercy of the people of God.
