Origin and history

According to the tradition, the image of the Black Virgin of the Kupfergasse is an ancient "General Picture" or "image of grace," to which the faithful come especially to ask for help in serious needs, and from which many favors and prayers attended from their origins are narrated. This fame of "Mother of Mercy" has for centuries attracted not only Catholics, but also pilgrims from other Christian denominations, even from neighbouring regions such as the Netherlands.

As for the documented history, the church of St. María in the Kupfergasse is a temple baroque built in the early 18th century and finished in 1715located in the historic centre (Altstadt-Nord) of Cologne, near the city museum. The Holy See has confirmed that 1675 the chapel of the Black Virgin of Santa Maria in the Kupfergassewhose dedication celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2025, which indicates a cult established at least since the end of the 17th century. In 2025, the Pope sent a pontifical legacy for this Jubilee celebration, underlining the historical and spiritual importance of the sanctuary.

The image and the sanctuary

La image of the Black Virgin of the Kupfergasse is described as a natural size wood size, before 1675, preserving the dark color of the polychrome that has been worth the name Black Mother of God (Madre de Dios negra). This is an image of Mary with the Child, venerated as Mother of Mercy e "image of grace"; the detailed iconography (position of the hands, specific symbolic elements) does not accurately contain in the sources consulted. The dark color has no specific dogmatic meaning, but it is devotionally interpreted as a sign of Mary's closeness to those who suffer and to the marginalized.

The sanctuary is the church of Santa Maria in the Kupfergasse (St. Maria in der Kupfergasse), recognized as Baroque church and Marian pilgrimage center in the city. It is a temple of remarkable dimensions, very visible and valued in the urban landscape of Cologne, frequented by both faithful and visitors. The sources do not mention that they have the title of minor basilica, ni de National sanctuaryGermany, in fact, does not have a single recognized national Marian sanctuary, and tradition points mainly to Altötting as a "national" shrine of Bavaria. The current confirmation of the custody of the sanctuary by the order of the Carmelites is not recorded in the sources consulted; therefore, this data is maintained as undocumented.

Sponsorship and coronation

The Black Virgin of the Kupfergasse is considered an important Marian pilgrimage center of Colognewith great devotion in the city and in the region of Renania. The sources consulted do not indicate a formal canonical patronage (for example, as the main patron of the city or of the archdiocese), but they do present it as one of the most significant Marian claims of Rhineland and Germany.

On the coronation, it is documented that 1925 the Pope Pío XI granted the Black Virgin of the Kupfergasse a "The tiara papal", that is, a three-level crown similar to the tiara used by the Popes. This is an exceptional pontifical gesture that exalts Mary's royalty. However, sources do not explicitly use the expression "canonical coronation" in the technical sense, nor do they describe a formal coronation ceremony according to the specific ritual in force, and therefore, it should be strictly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation in the usual legal terms.

Party and devotion

The most recent documentation refers in particular to the annual celebration of the dedication of the chapel of the Black Virgin of Santa Maria in the Kupfergassewhose effemeride was solemnly celebrated in 350.o aniversario 2025with the presence of a special envoy of the Pope and a very busy procession on the streets of Cologne. The Holy Father's letter places this celebration around the 14 September 2025 as a commemorative date of dedication. It does not clearly contain, in the sources consulted, a Fecha liturgica propia of the feast of the advocation other than the feast of dedication and the Marian festivals of the general calendar (such as the Nativity of the Virgin or the Immaculate).

The sanctuary is described as a annual pilgrimage centrewhom many faithful are moved by devotion to the Black Virgin. We talk about a great devotion local, with the presence of solemn processions and Marian acts involving associations, parishes and groups of different ecclesial movements. Various testimonies highlight the character of "pilgrimage place" of the church, and the constant influx of faithful who come to pray before the image throughout the year. There are no official attendance figures or a detailed description of specific traditions (e.g. specific rites with candles or tapes), beyond the usual processions and pilgrimages.

Link to the Rosary

Sources consulted on the Virgen Negra de la Kupfergasse do not expressly mention a particular association with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, specific fellowship of the Rosary erected in this sanctuary, own indulgences linked to the Rosary or own rosarian festivities). Therefore, it should be strictly stated that no consta a specific documentary relationship between this advocation and the Rosary.

However, in the pastoral and devotional practice of the Church, the Rosary It naturally accompanies Mary's veneration in all sanctuaries, especially where the Virgin is used as a Mother of mercy e "image of grace," as in the case of the Black Virgin of the Kupfergasse. The meditation of the mysteries of Christ in the Rosary allows the faithful to unite their own difficulties, sufferings and hopes to the life of the Lord, under the eyes of Mary. In this way, the prayer of the Rosary fits in an organic way with the spirituality of this sanctuary, where so many pilgrims come to entrust their needs to the Black Virgin and to thank the gifts received.
