Yemen Marian Advocations
In Yemen the Marian Catholic presence is small but significant: small communities in Aden and Sana'a and the surrender of the Missionaries of Charity, all under the patronage of Our Lady of Arabia, patron of the Vicariate of South Arabia.
- Wonders and Marian Anecdotes of Yemen
- On March 4, 2016, four Missionaries of Charity were killed in Aden during an attack on their home of elders, along with several collaborators; testimonies underline their Marian surrender to the end, dying in trying to protect the poorest.
- In 2015 Al Qaeda set fire to the Sagrada Familia church in the Crater district, described as the last Catholic church in use in southern Yemen, in a climate of war and persecution.
- In the midst of the chaos of war, Vicar Mons. Martinelli reported that two religious communities, including the Missionaries of Charity, were resisting in Yemen, supported by the strength of prayer, the sacraments and the Marian consecration of their congregation.
History of Marian devotion in Yemen
Christianity in Yemen has a history that dates back to apostolic times (in the case of some Eastern traditions) or to the arrival of European missionaries in the XVII- 17th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, although practiced by a minory of the population, has a significant presence among the local Catholic communities. Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and protector of Christians in contexts where they are often minory.
The Marian advocacy in Yemen reflects both the missionary tradition (Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, the Immaculate Conception) and the local expressions of Marian piety. The Christian communities, through their parishes, schools and social works, keep alive the devotion to Mary as the Mother of all peoples.
The church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Aden, built in 1890 by Italian capuchin, is the only Catholic temple active in Yemen, serving a small community of expatriates. The Yemeni civil war started in 2014 has decimated the Christian community even more, but the Missionaries of Charity of Saint Teresa of Calcutta continue their work in Aden and Hodeidah, serving the poorest and most needy. Four of them were killed in 2016 in Aden, martyrs of Marian charity.
