History of Marian devotion in Zambia

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Zambia, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Zambia, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

The Marian Arraigo in Zambian Land

Zambia, a country with no exit to the sea in the heart of southern Africa, was evangelized by Catholic missionaries in the late 19th century, mainly by the White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa) and the Jesuits. The Virgin Mary was presented to the Zambian peoples as "Mama Mary," a loving and powerful mother who intercede for her children. Marian devotion was so deeply rooted that today most of the country's parishes bear Marian names: Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, the Immaculate Conception. The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Consuelo in Chalando, in the diocese of Mpika, is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in the country, where the faithful come to seek spiritual comfort and physical healing.

The Episcopal Conference of Zambia has actively promoted Marian devotion as a means of spiritual renewal and national unity. The Rosary prayer is a widespread practice in Catholic communities, and many families pray it daily. Kibeho's apparitions in Rwanda (1981- 1989), approved by the Church, had a profound impact on Zambia, promoting the creation of Marian prayer groups and pilgrimages. In the archdiocese of Lusaka, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the center of the city is a place of constant prayer, where the faithful come throughout the day to entrust their intentions to the Virgin. The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is celebrated with great solemnity throughout the country.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Lusaka

Party: 7 October · Place: Lusaka (Zambia, Zambia)

The Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka, although dedicated to the Child Jesus, has a Marian chapel where an image of Our Lady of the Rosary brought from Portugal is venerated in the 1950s. The cathedral, built between 1958 and 1962, is an imposing modernist building with a seen brick façade and a 40-meter bell tower that dominates the profile of the capital. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary is a size of olive wood, the work of the Portuguese artist Joaquim Machado, who represents Mary giving the Rosary to Saint Domingo. Every 7 October, the archdiocese organizes a Marian procession that brings together thousands of faithful from the 60 parishes of Lusaka.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Livingstone

Party: 11 February · Place: Livingstone (Province of Sur, Zambia)

In Livingstone, the tourist city next to the majestic Victoria Falls, the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the oldest in Zambia. The church, built in 1905 by the White Fathers, is a historic sandstone building that has survived over a century of history. Its Lourdes Grotto, built in 1925 with rock from the Zambeze River, is a very dear pilgrimage place. The Catholic community of Livingstone, composed of people from the ethnic Tonga, Lozi and Bemba groups, celebrates the feast of February 11 with traditional dances and songs in the vernacular languages, in a sample of the inculturation of the Marian faith in Zambian culture.

"Our Lady of Lourdes of Livingstone, pray for us.

The Catholic Church in Zambia has grown extraordinary: from approximately 300,000 faithful in 1960 to more than 6 million today. The Virgin Mary has been a key figure in this growth. The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Consuelo in Chalando is visited by pilgrims from all over the country who seek the intercession of Mary in their needs. Many faithful attribute cures and favors to the Virgin of Chalando. The Episcopal Conference of Zambia has declared this sanctuary a place of national pilgrimage, and every 15 August, the feast of the Assumption congregates more than 50,000 pilgrims there.

The shrine of Our Lady of the Consuelo in Chalando, in the diocese of Mpika, is the second most important Marian sanctuary in Zambia. It was founded by the Polish Franciscan missionaries in the 1930s, and has since been a place of grace and conversion. The image of Our Lady of Consuelo, a size of olive wood brought from Poland in 1935, is venerated by thousands of pilgrims who come every year in search of spiritual comfort and physical healing. The sanctuary is also a center for the formation of catechists and lay leaders, who then take Marian devotion to their communities of origin throughout the country.

The archdiocese of Lusaka, erected in 1959, covers the capital of Zambia and its surroundings. Archbishop Alick Banda has promoted devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary as a means of family unity. Every October, all the parishes of the archdiocese perform the "Rosary Crusade in Families," in which each family undertakes to pray the Rosary daily during the month. This initiative has had a great impact on the spiritual life of Zambian Catholic families, strengthening unity and the transmission of faith from parents to children. The Virgin Mary is presented as the perfect model of mother and educator.
