Marian devotion
Our Lady of Harare
Harare, Zimbabue
Zimbabwean Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, the Cathedral of St. Mary is the center of the Catholic faith. The Jesuit missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith in times of crisis
Zimbabwe has suffered a devastating economic crisis. Catholics are a significant minority, about 10% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who comforts them in the crisis.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects Zimbabwean Catholics. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, knowing that the Virgin listens to them.
