Water blessed with the prayers of exorcism of the Roman Ritual, the most common of the sacramentals, to sprinkle people, homes and objects.

Documented history and memory received

Blessed water is a sacramental that remembers Baptism and accompanies blessings and sprinkles. The formulas have changed historically: the previous Roman Ritual contained explicit exorcisms of water and salt; the current ordinary rite uses the formulas approved in the Bendium. Not all present holy water should be called "exorcised," nor is it attributed to magic power.

Who venerates the memory

The look is directed to Jesus Christ and to the mystery of his Incarnation, Passion, Death, Resurrection or Reign. The image, relic, monument or custom does not act by its own power: it serves the memory of the Gospel and leads to prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.

History, tradition and discernment

The current Bendium is distinguished from historical formulas with exorcism; the holy water does not act magically. The tab retains the memory received without turning legend, witness or believing interpretation into a historically demonstrated fact.

Celebration and devotional life

Festivity or main time: without own liturgical date documented in the main source.

No automatic guarantee of protection, healing, salvation or favor is documented. Christian practice requires faith, conversion, sacraments and charity; no object acts as an amulet.

Para orar

I exorcise you, a creature of the water, in the name of God the omnipotent Father and of Jesus Christ his Son, our Lord, that you may flee all the power of the enemy. May this water with salt be poured away from the unclean spirit, Lord. By Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
