The basil accompanies in some communities the feast of the Exaltation. His link with the finding of the Cross belongs to the pious tradition, not to the proven history.
Documented history and memory received
In some Byzantine communities the basil accompanies the liturgical presentation and veneration of the Cross. The explanation that links the plant to the place where St. Helena found the Vera Cruz is a later pious tradition. The blessed plant is a sacramental; it has no autonomous power or substitute for prayer and sacraments.
Who venerates the memory
The look is directed to Jesus Christ and to the mystery of his Incarnation, Passion, Death, Resurrection or Reign. The image, relic, monument or custom does not act by its own power: it serves the memory of the Gospel and leads to prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.
History, tradition and discernment
The use of basil is not uniform throughout the East. Its relationship with the finding of the Vera Cruz is a pious tradition; a blessed plant has no autonomous power of protection or healing. The tab retains the memory received without turning legend, witness or believing interpretation into a historically demonstrated fact.
