The Catholic Cathedral of Tangier is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the mystery of her Immaculate Conception and to the Holy Spirit. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Tangier and not a cathedral of the Asunción.
Construction and dedication
The first stone in the current building was blessed on 4 June 1953. During its construction, on 14 November 1956, the former Apostolic Vicariate of Morocco was elevated to the rank of archdiocese. The blessing and dedication of the cathedral took place on 8 December 1961, solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
The project is for architect Luis M. Feduchi. The Archdiocese describes a modern and sober architecture, with a Latin cross floor and a classical line façade.
Glass and artistic works
Three large windows are opened in the apse. The plant represents the Immaculate; the lateral compositions include musical angels and praying. The diocesan information links the windows to the master Labra and points to Arcadio Blasco's artistic intervention.
The Immaculate, diocesan Patron
The Immaculate Conception is the patron of the diocesan Church of Tangier. This dedication places Mary at the centre of the spiritual identity of the temple without confusing her with the advocation of the venerated Assumption in the French church of the city.
A Church of Meeting and Service
The cathedral serves a Catholic community of people of various nationalities. As an episcopal seat, it is the place of diocesan celebrations, prayer and ecclesial communion. The Catholic presence in Morocco is carrying out its mission with respect for the country, dialogue and service to the vulnerable.
