Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"The medal of the condemned: Claude Newman on death row"

Claude Newman He was a prisoner sentenced to death in Mississippi in the 1940s. According to the account transmitted by the padre Robert O’Leary (1911-1984), which was his confessor, Claude saw a Miraculous Medal in the hands of another prisoner, he asked for it and hung it around his neck. That same night, she told the story, the Virgin Mary appeared to her and said: «Si quieres ser mi hijo y tenerme como madre, haz llamar a un sacerdote católico». Claude asked for a priest, received instruction, was baptized and faced execution with remarkable serenity.
We must honestly distinguish the truth from the transmitted.
Even dates ask for caution: secondary sources cite 1943 for arrest and trial, and 1944 for execution, without total unanimity on the exact day (3 or 4 February). No consta with uniform security.
As regards Rosaryin the sources consulted no consta a direct and specific link to this story: the most clear Marian thread is the Miraculous Medal and the call to conversion and baptism. If you wish to join the Rosary, you should do so only indirectly, as part of the general Marian spirituality. The most solid and pastoral beautiful of the story is simple and beautiful: a small medal, received almost by chance, became the sign that opened to a condemned man the search for God.
