The twelve stars of Europe and the crown of the Virgin

A beautiful Marian inspiration, a history with nuances and a symbol that today belongs to all Europeans.

We see it in buildings, plates, passports and coins: twelve golden stars, always twelve, forming a circle on a blue background. Many Catholics have immediately recognized a family image: the woman of the Apocalypse, dressed in sun and crowned with twelve stars. Was the European flag born from there?

The honest answer has two plans. The institutional meaning is secular and clearly defined. At the same time, one of the authors who presented the design later stated that it had been inspired by the iconography of the Virgin Mary. Both can be counted together without confusion.

Before the flag of the Union, it was the flag of the Council of Europe

The emblem was elected in 1955 by the Council of Europe, an organization other than the current European Union. Its Assembly approved the circle of stars on 25 October and the Committee of Ministers adopted it on 9 December. Decades later, the European Communities assumed the same symbol and began to use it in 1986.

The archives of the Council of Europe show that there were many proposals: crosses, stars in different provisions, varied colors and designs linked to the Member States. Finally, a simple, stable and common figure was sought. Twelve were not the number of countries: it represented fullness and perfection, while the circle expressed unity.

Arsène Heitz and the crowned woman of stars

Arsène Heitz, an employee of the Council of Europe, presented numerous proposals during the process. Among the designs preserved in the files is its circle of twelve gold stars on blue field. Years later, Heitz publicly linked his inspiration to the image of the woman crowned by twelve stars in chapter 12 of the Revelation, read by the Catholic tradition in Marian key.

"A great sign appeared in the sky: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a twelve-star crown over her head" (Ap 12: 1).

The blue background reinforced that resonance for many, as the blue often accompanies Mary in Western art. The temporary coincidence added strength to the anecdote: the final agreement occurred in December 1955, around the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. However, institutional documentation did not adopt this explanation as an official meaning.

What the European institutions officially say

The European Union explains that the twelve stars represent unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. The Council of Europe speaks of perfection, fullness and stability, and stresses that design does not officially identify with a particular religion or nation.

The necessary distinction: It is not right to say that the European Union has declared its flag the crown of the Virgin. It is legitimate to tell that Arsène Heitz linked his proposal to that Marian image and that some religious designs were present during the long creative process.

An intimate inspiration turned into a shared symbol

The beauty of history does not depend on overdoing it. A creator can drink from a spiritual source and then deliver a work whose public use is wider. The twelve-star crown has for centuries belonged to the biblical and artistic language of Europe; the institutional emblem, for its part, welcomes believers and non-believers under shared civil values.

For a Christian, contemplating these stars can become a discreet prayer. Not because the institutions force them to be interpreted like this, but because the heart recognizes a loved form: Mary as a sign of hope, surrounded by a crown that does not divide, but forms a circle.

In a Europe marked for centuries by wars between brotherly peoples, it is particularly suggestive that stars do not compete or be ordered by size. They're all the same, they all look up and none of them occupy the center. In the center is an open blue space. Unity does not erase every people; it brings them together.

"Mary, Queen of Peace, accompanies the peoples of Europe and teach us to live together while welcoming our differences.
