Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Mount Sion Gikungu: A sanctuary of peace in the midst of war"

On Mount Zion in Gikungu, in the Gihosha district of Bujumbura, stands the Schoenstatt Marian Shrine of Burundi, a branch of the original shrine in Vallendar, Germany. There, the Mother, Queen, and Thrice Admirable Victress of Schoenstatt is venerated, whom local devotion also calls, with hope, Queen of Peace.
The history of this place is marked by a poignant coincidence. The sanctuary was inaugurated in 1994, precisely the year that an article by the Movement describes as a time of “despair and weeping” in Burundi: the assassination of the first democratically elected president and the ensuing war cast a shadow over the country. In the midst of that darkness, the sanctuary was born as a place of solace and hope, “a gift of faith and hope for the world,” and it has become a major national pilgrimage center.
Let us distinguish between documented evidence and oral tradition. The site's status as a national Marian pilgrimage center, its inauguration in 1994 during the height of the economic crisis, and its explicit intention to offer peace, education, and reconciliation are all documented. However, the attribution of specific miracles—specific healings, one-off interventions—is not found in verifiable written sources; instead, there is generic reference to "countless graces." Nor is there any record of a Marian apparition prior to the site's founding.
The most beautiful and well-documented aspect of Gikungu is its reconciling nature: after years of violence, many families came with simple votive offerings and testimonies of protection, and groups from different ethnicities and regions made pilgrimages together to pray for peace in the country. In the Schoenstatt tradition, the Rosary is a common practice, and it is very likely that it is prayed there, especially during pilgrimages for peace; however, the sources consulted do not specify a "Rosary of Mont Sion Gikungu" nor a canonically defined link between the devotion and this prayer. Therefore, what is known at this point is primarily the common practice, not a specific fact.
