Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The Rosary in the heart of the Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo does not have a world-famous Marian sanctuary like Kibeho's in neighbouring Rwanda, but it beats a very intense Marian life. Many parishes and shrines are dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Lourdes or Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, and in many dioceses a deep Marian piety is lived, even if the accessible sources are more pastoral than historical.
The evangelization of the Congo—begun at the end of the 15th century and resumed in the 19th—was always linked to the figure of Mary, according to the custom of the missionary congregations. As in so many places in Africa, the Christian people know themselves to be under the maternal protection of the Virgin, and they express this in processions, consecrations, and, above all, in the recitation of the Rosary.
It should be said with honesty that the detailed information of a Congolese national sanctuary with precise accounts of miracles is not accessible in general sources; there are local sanctuaries, but their chronicles are kept mainly in diocesan bulletins. So, on a unique and universally known case of the Kibeho type, no consta at that level of documentation.
What is undeniably evident, and deeply moving, is the role of the Rosary in suffering. In contexts of war and displacement, in the Great Lakes region—Congo, Rwanda, Burundi—the Rosary becomes a prayer of consolation and spiritual resilience: the simple weapon of those who have no other defense than to entrust themselves to the Mother. African nuns and pastoral workers bear witness to this time and again. In the wounded heart of Congo, the Rosary beads continue to pass through the fingers of the faithful.
