The Church in the Namib Desert
Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world: 2.5 million people in 825,000 km ² of desert and savannah. The Oblate missionaries of Mary Immaculate evangelized the north of the country since the end of the 19th century. Catholicism today accounts for 20 per cent of the Namibian population.
The Shrine of Döbra
El National Peace Sanctuary is located in The Babraabout 20 km from Windhoek (the capital). It was founded in the years of the Namibia War of Independence (1966-1990), when the country was administered by South Africa under the apartheid system. The Church took a clear position against racial segregation and for independence.
The venerated image, Our Lady of Peacethe day of Namibia's independence was canonically crowned: the 21 March 1990. The coincidence was intentional: the Church wanted to link the birth of the free nation to the protection of the Virgin.
