The Immaculate Conception among the ruins of Quebec

In Quebec City's Place Royale stands the small church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, one of the oldest stone churches in North America. Before bearing the name "Victories," it was dedicated to the Infant Jesus and the Immaculate Conception. And from those difficult years, it holds a story that the French-Canadian community has repeated for generations.

During the British siege of 1759, in the midst of the Seven Years' War, bombardments severely damaged the church, and much of the Lower Town quarter was burned. Parish tradition recounts that, when everything around it had been destroyed, an image of the Immaculate Virgin was found intact among the ruins, barely blackened by the fire. For that small community, devastated and fearful for its future, it was like a message: the Mother was still there, standing among the rubble.

Let us be careful to separate fact from story. It is documented that the church was damaged in the bombings of 1759 and was subsequently rebuilt; it is also documented that the parish preserves ancient Marian images, some dating back to the 18th century. The specific detail of an image "saved from the fire" comes from local tradition: there is no contemporary report that records it precisely. Even so, it is understood that the community experienced it as a sign of protection, in a church that would soon after take the name of Our Lady of Victories.
