The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Chartres, one of the summits of the European Gothic, holds a relic that made it famous throughout the Middle Ages: the Sancta Camisa (Sainte Tunique or Sancta Camisia), venerated as the robe or veil that the Virgin Mary would have worn. Thanks to it, Chartres became one of the great Marian centers of the West, with solemn processions, oaths and rivers of pilgrims.

Tradition tells that the relic came to Chartres by the hand of Emperor Carlomagne or some ruler of the East. But the episode that touched the faithful most occurred in the great fire of 1194, when much of the Roman cathedral was destroyed and was feared to have lost the Sancta Camisa forever.

When the ruins were cleared, according to local tradition, the canons appeared alive in the crypt, showing the relic intact: this was read as a sign of the Virgin's protection over the city.

This revived the devotion that the Gothic cathedral we admire today from the ashes. It's up to us to distinguish. The cult of the Sancta Camisia from the Middle Ages is documented, with mention in chronicles and inventories; the great fires (especially that of 1194) and subsequent reconstruction; and the role of Chartres as a great sanctuary of pilgrimage. On the other hand, the exact origin of relic and the prodigious details of its preservation belong to the pious tradition: historical criticism treats them as stories transmitted by the faith of the people, not as a verifiable chronicle.

The devotion of Chartres is well before the Rosary as we know it: it is love for Mary as Theotokos, Mother of God, focused on the Incarnation. From the 15th and 16th centuries, with the spread of the Rosary, the cathedral naturally integrated it into its practices, and today it is prayed in the Marian pilgrimages that have their heart at the foot of the relic. But there is no foundational or revealed link between the Sancta Camisa and the Rosary, beyond that common piety.

Sources: Cathedral and diocese of Chartres and works of dissemination and history of art. It's documented the ancient veneration of relic, fire and Gothic reconstruction; Pious tradition the origin of the robe and its prodigious salvation; the link with the Rosary is only ordinary devotional: no consta one specific.
