In the small town of Loreto, in the Italian Marche region, the Holy House has been venerated for centuries: humble walls that the Loreto tradition identifies with the house in Nazareth where the Virgin Mary lived and where the angel announced to her that she would be the Mother of God. It is one of Italy's great Marian shrines, now enshrined within a grand basilica that protects it like a jewel in its case.

Pious tradition recounts that the house did not arrive there by human hands, but was miraculously transported by angels, first to Tersatto (Trsat, in present-day Croatia) and then to Loreto. Accounts place the transfers in 1291 and 1294, with the final arrival on the hill of Loreto on the night of December 9-10, 1296. This is why December 10 is the feast day of Our Lady of Loreto.

Una versión muy querida dice que la casa se posó primero en el bosque de una mujer llamada Loreta, de quien habría tomado nombre el lugar.

Here, we must distinguish with care and honesty. The angelic translation belongs to devotional tradition. What is documented is the great antiquity of the sanctuary as a center of pilgrimage and the existence of historical, archaeological, and material studies on the venerated house. Some sources cite research that supports similarities in measurements and materials with constructions in the Holy Land; it is best to phrase this as "according to cited studies," not as conclusive proof.

Loreto's connection to the Rosary is liturgical and devotional: the Litany of Loreto, those invocations to the Virgin Mary that so many faithful pray at the end of the Rosary, takes its name precisely from this shrine. There is no direct historical link between the Holy House and the institution of the Rosary, but rather this beautiful affinity within Marian piety. In 1920, Benedict XV declared Our Lady of Loreto patroness of aviators and aeronautics.

Es tradición piadosa el traslado por ángeles; es hecho documentado la antigüedad del santuario y su condición de gran centro de peregrinación; los estudios sobre el origen de la casa se citan con prudencia, sin presentarlos como prueba concluyente.
