Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Our Lady of La Vang: comfort in the forest of the martyrs"

About sixty kilometers from Huế, in central Vietnam, lies the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang, hidden in the ancient jungle where, at the end of the 18th century, Catholics sought refuge from persecution. Under Emperor Cảnh Thịnh, around 1798, many Christians fled to that dense forest, enduring hunger, disease, and the threat of martyrdom.
Oral tradition recounts that one night, while the community was praying, they saw a woman surrounded by light on the branches of a tree, dressed in the traditional Vietnamese garment, the áo dài, with the Child Jesus in her arms and two angels at her side. They recognized her as the Virgin Mary. She comforted them, encouraged them not to fear for their faith, and, according to the story, instructed them to boil tree leaves to obtain remedies for their ailments.
It is important to state this clearly: no reliable, contemporary written source reports these apparitions; they are based on a cherished oral tradition among the Vietnamese people. The Virgin's specific words, the continuity of the visions over nearly a century, and the healings of that era belong to the realm of devotion, not to historical record.
What is documented is the life of the sanctuary: an initial chapel in 1886, a larger church consecrated in 1901 before some twelve thousand pilgrims, enlarged in 1928; its elevation to a minor basilica by Saint John XXIII in 1962; the severe destruction during the war between 1972 and 1975, and its subsequent reconstruction. In 1988, when canonizing 117 Vietnamese martyrs, Saint John Paul II recalled La Vang and encouraged its restoration. The current image, with Asian features and áo dài (a type of traditional Vietnamese clothing), is an iconography consolidated through inculturation, not a reflection of the original vision.
