In the temple of Santo Domingo in Guatemala City, today the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, one of the oldest and most beloved Marian images of the country is venerated. The people warmly call it the "Virgin of Silver," because it is made of that precious metal, and the Dominican tradition presents it as a companion of Guatemala's religious history since colonial times.

Let's see what's for sure. It is documented that the sculpture was venerated in the temple of Santo Domingo since the 16th century; that its pontifical coronation was arranged by the decree of Pius XI on October 16, 1931; and that the solemn coronation was held on January 28, 1934. A local academic thesis also confirms that the image is silver and measures approximately two rods.

Conviene, en cambio, ser prudente con una afirmación muy repetida: que sea «la primera imagen coronada canónicamente de América». Numerosas fuentes devocionales y periodísticas lo sostienen, pero con las fuentes accesibles esa primacía no consta plenamente verificada en un documento oficial; es más honesto presentarla como afirmación de la piedad y la prensa, no como certeza documentada. De igual modo, los relatos de favores y exvotos concretos pertenecen a la piedad popular y no constan en detalle en las fuentes abiertas revisadas.

La prensa guatemalteca recuerda que la coronación de 1934 fue un acontecimiento muy concurrido, con una «historia muy especial» detrás, ligada al antiguo culto dominico y al reconocimiento pontificio. Ese dato sí es sólido: un pueblo entero se volcó para coronar a su Madre.
