In the Cairo neighborhood of Zeitoun, above the domes of a Coptic Orthodox church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a series of luminous apparitions began in April 1968 and continued intermittently for about three years. Unlike other Marian apparitions, there were no privileged visionaries or spoken messages: it was a luminous phenomenon witnessed, according to accounts, by multitudes from all walks of life.

Tradition and chronicles of the time describe a luminous female figure, identified as the Virgin Mary, appearing above the temple in full view of large crowds. Coptic Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and curious onlookers from all over the country came to witness it. Numerous photographs and testimonies circulated, and the Coptic Orthodox Church acknowledged the phenomenon favorably.

It is advisable to proceed with caution here. What is firmly established is that there was a prolonged luminous phenomenon, witnessed by multitudes and documented by the press and photography of the time, and that the Coptic hierarchy accepted it as authentic. The exact nature of the phenomenon and its ultimate interpretation belong to the realm of faith; accounts of associated healings are transmitted primarily through testimony, without a systematic, publicly documented critical record.

These apparitions occurred during a difficult time for Egypt, and many faithful experienced them as a source of comfort and a sign of maternal closeness to an entire people, regardless of creed. There is no record of a verbal message or a specific connection to the Rosary; the unique characteristic of Zeitoun is precisely its visual and collective nature.
