The Kingdom of Esuatini
Esuatini (formerly Swaziland) is one of the last absolute kingdoms of the world: King Mswati III rules without parliament and with almost total powers. It is also one of the smallest countries in Africa, surrounded by South Africa and Mozambique. The Catholic community accounts for 20 per cent of the population.
The Servants in Esuatini
La Order of the Servants of Mary (Servants) - founded in Florence in 1233 by seven traders who left their business to serve the Virgin - is the congregation that has taken the lead in the mission in Esuatini. The Servants have a special devotion to Our Lady of the Seven Doloreswhich became the central vocation of the Church in this country.
La catedral de la Assumption of Mary in Manzini - the largest city in the country - is the seat of the bishopric and the main Catholic temple. The Feast of the Assumption (August 15) is the most important Marian celebration in the country.
A proven Iglesia
In a country marked by a high rate of HIV / AIDS (Esuatini has the highest HIV prevalence in the world), the Catholic Church has been a pioneer in the care of the sick and orphans. The Servants and Sisters of the Assumption work in hospitals and in the education of the children of parents who died from AIDS.
