The "Nossa Senhora" in the mountains of Angola
Drill is the capital of the province of Huíla, in the southwest of Angola, at 1,700 meters altitude. The city has a strong Portuguese footprint: it was colonized by immigrants from the Alentejo and the Azores. The Portuguese settlers recreated the monument of the Christ the King of Lisbon and established the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mount ("Our Lady of the Mount").
The Shrine and the Civil War
Angola suffered one of the longest and most devastating civil wars in Africa (1975- 2002). The shrine of Nossa Senhora do Monte in Lubango was one of the few spaces that remained open throughout the war. It was a shelter for civilians in the most difficult times. The image of the Virgin presided over decades of suffering and was the object of devotion of a community seeking comfort in the faith.
After the end of the war (2002), the sanctuary was one of the first symbols of reconstruction. Pope John Paul II visited Angola in 1992 and appointed Nossa Senhora do Monte as the patron of the reconciliation of the country.
