Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
«Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes: the Star of the Sea of the fishermen»

Along the coast and rivers of Brazil, especially in the south, there beats a very specific and very human devotion: Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, the Virgin who protects those who go to sea. She is Mary as Estrela do Mar, guide in the midst of the waters, to whom fishing families pray for a safe return and their daily sustenance.
The feast is usually celebrated on February 2nd, coinciding with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the liturgy. In many coastal towns, a cherished tradition is maintained: fishermen decorate their boats and participate in a procession on the water, carrying an image of the Virgin Mary in a cortege of vessels. It is a simple and deeply rooted spirituality that places work, travel, and all of life under Mary's mantle.
Let us distinguish with caution. As a pious tradition, the devotion dates back to the Middle Ages and the time of the Crusades, linked to the title "Star of the Sea." What can be said with documented certainty is that the title spread from Portugal and arrived in Brazil with the colonizers, becoming firmly established in fishing communities and coastal areas. These sources do not provide a single founding narrative, a universally accepted "first miracle," or a local origin date valid for all of Brazil.
It is also worth noting a related devotion, Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Monte Serrat, associated with Monte Serrat de Santos (São Paulo) and the Immaculate Conception, whose liturgical date is December 8; but a reliable chronology of its origin and founding miracles is not found in these sources.
Regarding the Rosary, the connection is indirect but real: the title Estrela do Mar (Star of the Sea) shares the same Marian logic of mediation and guidance that nourishes so many Rosary devotions. However, there is no evidence of an exclusive historical link with a Rosary confraternity or a Rosary practice specific to the Feast of the Navigators.
