Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
Our Lady of Bangladesh in the village of Mary
In the south-east of Bangladesh, near Chittagong, now the archdiocese of Chattogram, is the national Marian sanctuary of the country, in a village called precisely Mariamnagar, "the city of Mary," also known as Diang. The advocation is popularly known as Our Lady of Bangladesh.
The region has one of the oldest Catholic communities in the subcontinent, with a Christian presence since the 16th and 17th centuries, coming with Portuguese missionaries and traders. From these roots a stable rural community was born, with its parish and Marian tradition, which over time, especially after Bangladesh's independence in 1971, was consolidated as a national Marian sanctuary thanks to strong popular devotion and mass pilgrimages.
We have to distinguish the safe from the pious. The ancient Christian presence in the region, the existence of the national sanctuary of Mariamnagar as a centre of pilgrimage recognized by the hierarchy, and the celebration of great Marian pilgrimages with thousands of faithful are documented. On the other hand, the exact date of the foundation of the sanctuary or the origin of the image do not contain the accessible sources; nor does it contain a account of apparition or miraculous finding. The devotion is based rather on the faith history of the community and on the favors that the faithful attribute to the intercession of the Virgin, such as the protection against the cyclones and floods so frequent in the country, without the existence of canonical processes published.
