In the Soufanieh neighborhood of Damascus, a series of phenomena have been occurring since November 1982 surrounding a small icon of the Virgin Mary in the home of a young woman. The devotion that arose there is known as Our Lady of Soufanieh and has gained international recognition, especially for its insistent call for unity among Christians.

We must be especially careful here, because reliable and official information is scarce, and much of what circulates comes from non-institutional devotional websites. What can be stated with greater certainty is that there were witnesses, photographs, and visits by priests and bishops to the site over the years. Accounts mention oil exuding from the icon and other phenomena.

The supernatural interpretation of these events lacks formal approval from the Holy See; there is no universal ecclesial declaration on the authenticity of the phenomena. Therefore, it is important to clearly distinguish between what is minimally attested (the existence of the devotion, witnesses, photographs, ecclesiastical visits) and the miraculous interpretation, which belongs to the realm of faith and has not been the subject of a definitive canonical pronouncement.

Given the limited availability of sources, the most prudent approach is to present Soufanieh as a place of prayer for Christian unity, where many faithful have perceived a sign of Mary's closeness in a land wounded by suffering, without asserting as proven what the Church has not declared.
