Apparition of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolás (Argentina, 1983)

Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolás

Argentina · 1983-1990 · Adopted by the Church in 2016

A Sunday of September on the shore of Paraná

On September 25, 1983, Gladys Quiroga de Motta, a 40-year-old housewife living in San Nicolás de los Arroyos (Buenos Aires province), prayed at her home when she felt a light presence that was identified as the Virgin Mary. The apparition lasted a few minutes, but left Gladys with absolute certainty of what he had contemplated. No one in his surroundings knew that day; the woman kept the event inside with a mixture of astonishment and perplexity.

San Nicolás de los Arroyos is a city of about 150,000 inhabitants located on the banks of the Paraná River, 240 kilometres north of Buenos Aires. His religious history in no way pretended to become a Marian pilgrimage centre: there was no known sanctuary, no tradition of apparitions, or any extraordinary circumstance that anticipated what was about to begin.

What did exist was a deeply religious community and, at that time, deeply wounded. Argentina had just emerged from the military dictatorship (1976-1983), which had left thirty thousand missing, a shattered economy and a society in a state of moral shock. The elections that would return democracy to the country would be held just one month after the first apparition on 30 October 1983. In this context of uncertainty and collective pain, the message that Gladys would begin to receive insisted on peace, the Rosary and reconciliation.

Gladys Quiroga de Motta: perfil de la vidente

Gladys was born on June 20, 1942 in San Nicolás. Married, mother of family, without higher studies or intellectual pretensions, described herself as a simple woman whose only outstanding devotion was to pray the Rosary with some regularity. It did not belong to charismatic movements nor had it had previous mystical experiences.

The researchers who studied it over the years stressed their psychological coherence and the absence of any material benefits derived from the apparitions. Gladys never got in, never sold books, never founded an organization of his own. He continued to live in his usual home, with his husband and his children, without looking for prominence. When the tide of pilgrims turned St. Nicholas into one of the great Marian centers of the Spanish-speaking world, she remained accessible but discreet.

Psychiatric evaluations carried out on a diocesan basis did not detect psychosis, hysteria or any other disorder that could explain the visions from a pathological perspective. This favourable opinion was decisive for the diocesan bishop to begin the process of formal discernment.

Documented ciphers: Between 25 September 1983 and 11 February 1990, 1,800 apparitions were recorded. Gladys received messages from the Virgin and also, on occasion, from Jesus Christ. The texts were transcribed in notebooks that the seer gave to the diocese, forming the documentary corpus examined during the process of discernment.

The 1,800 apparitions: nature and content

The frequency of the apparitions was unusual even compared to other major Marian cases of the 20th century. While in Fatima there were six apparitions over six months, in St. Nicholas the Virgin presented herself to Gladys almost daily for more than six years. This density raised the question of verification from the beginning: how to discern so many messages in such a long period?

The diocesan methodology chose to study content rather than frequency. The theologians appointed by the bishop analyzed Gladys' notebooks in search of doctrinal contradictions or heterodoxas. They didn't find any. The content was consistently christocentric, oriented to personal conversion, prayer of the Rosary and social peace.

The core of the message can be summarized in three axes: first, the Rosary as a privileged road of salvation and peace in the world; second, the call to conversion and reconciliation among Argentines, especially in the post-dictatorial context; third, the announcement that St. Nicholas would be a place of grace and pilgrimage for all Latin America.

«Hija mía, quiero que la gente se encuentre conmigo a través del Rosario. El Rosario es la oración que me agrada. Con él se alcanza la paz del alma, la paz de los hogares, la paz del mundo.»

The tone of the messages was warm and maternal, without the apocalyptic components that characterize other apparitions of the 20th century. There were no announcements of imminent punishment or threats of disasters. The Virgin presented herself primarily as an inviting mother, not as a warning judge. This moderation was positively assessed by the ecclesiastical evaluators.

The Eucharistic Hostias: the most discussed phenomenon

Among the extraordinary events associated with San Nicolás, the most discussed is that of the consecrated hostias. On several occasions, Gladys claimed to receive during the apparitions a host that was deposited in his tongue. This phenomenon, if verified, would be a case of miraculous communion referred to in the hagiography but extremely rare in the recent history of the Church.

The witnesses present on some of these occasions stated that they had seen Gladys in a state of ecstasy with his mouth open, without anyone coming near her. The diocese took note of the phenomenon with deliberate caution: in the official declarations of approval of 2016, the topic is mentioned as part of the set of extraordinary facts without a definitive judgment on its supernatural nature.

Chronology of the discernment process

  • 25 sept. 1983First apparition at Gladys' home in San Nicolás de los Arroyos.
  • 1984–1985Gladys communicates the apparitions to the local parish priest. Bishop Castagna authorizes the image in the cathedral and spontaneous pilgrimages begin.
  • 11 feb. 1990Last documented apparition, on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Gladys does not receive any more visions, although he continues to receive sporadic inner locutions.
  • 1990–2015diocesan research period: theological commission, psychiatric studies, examination of notebooks. The provisional sanctuary receives millions of visitors.
  • 22 May 2016Monsignor Héctor Cardelli issues the decree of official approval. San Nicolás becomes the first Marian apparition approved in Argentina.

The 2016 approval: first in Argentina

The decree of Bishop Héctor Cardelli, published on May 22, 2016, stated that the apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary of St. Nicholas are "of a supernatural nature" and that the messages received by Gladys "are in conformity with the Catholic faith and morality." The approval allowed public worship, the construction of the final sanctuary and the proclamation of its own holiday on 25 September.

The impact was considerable. In Argentina, a country with an intense but unprecedented Marian culture of approved apparition, the news resonated in all media and triggered a renewed wave of pilgrimages. Pope Francis, who was well aware of the phenomenon of San Nicolás because of his status as Archbishop of Buenos Aires for years, publicly referred to the sanctuary in terms of pastoral encouragement in 2018.

Latin American context: The approval of San Nicolás in 2016 was the first of the Southern Cone and one of the very few throughout the continent, along with Betania (Venezuela, 1987) and some of the least formal recognitions in Mexico and Brazil.

The sanctuary by the river Paraná

The place chosen for the final sanctuary is an explanade by the banks of the Paraná River, on the outskirts of San Nicolás. The construction, started in the 1990s, has gradually grown to a large temple, an outside square for outdoor celebrations, an area of care for pilgrims and various service facilities.

The architectural set deliberately integrates the presence of the river. The Paraná, one of the great rivers of the continent, is visible from the atrium and is part of the spiritual landscape of the place. The devotees speak of the Virgin of Parana or the Mother of the River with the same nature with which the Lourdesins speak of the Gave. There is something in the presence of water that reinforces the character of meeting and grace.

The image venerated in the sanctuary faithfully reproduces the description Gladys gave of the Virgin during the apparitions: standing figure, blue mantle, child in arms, rosary in hand. It is a wood size, polychrome and crowned, which occupies the main altar and to which thousands of liturgical acts, processions and prayer vigil have been held.

Three million pilgrims a year

The inflow figures to the shrine of St. Nicholas are extraordinary for a place that, until 1983, was completely unknown on the map of the world Marian pilgrimage. According to the data provided by the administration of the sanctuary, the place receives between two and three million visitors annually, with peaks around September 25 and the first Saturday of each month, when a solemn mass of special devotion is held.

The pilgrims come not only from all of Argentina but also from Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and Brazil. To a lesser extent, organized groups come from Colombia, Mexico and European countries with numerous Argentine communities, such as Spain and Italy. Most are families and parish groups that arrive by bus, although there are also those who make the way on foot for several days as a penitential or thanksgiving act.

The organization of this mass flow has required considerable infrastructure: parking for thousands of vehicles, health services, water stations and a permanent team of volunteers. The local economy of San Nicolás has been significantly transformed: hotels, pensions, restaurants and businesses of religious articles have proliferated around the sanctuary, creating a dynamic comparable to that of other great pilgrimage centers in the Hispanic world.

The spiritual legacy: the Rosary as the axis

If there is a constant in the 1,800 messages received by Gladys is the insistence on the Rosary. The Virgin identified herself from the first apparition as "Our Lady of the Rosary" and turned again and again to the importance of this prayer as an instrument of peace, conversion and family union. In this, the message of St. Nicholas links directly with the Dominican tradition and with the great Rosarian shrines of the world, from Pompeya to Fatima.

The Argentine specificity of the message lies in its social dimension. In a nation that emerged from the barbarity of the dictatorship, the Virgin called for reconciliation between brothers, for healing the wounds of the past and for building a new coexistence. This aspect was highlighted by the Argentine bishops in their pastoral comments: the apparition met the real spiritual and social needs of a people in the process of healing.

«Argentina necesita paz. Paz en los corazones, paz en los hogares, paz entre los hombres. Rezad el Rosario y encontraréis esta paz.»

San Nicolás on the world Marian map

With the approval of 2016, San Nicolás de los Arroyos became a relevant place on the map of the Marian apparitions approved by the Catholic Church. If it is taken into account that, from the apparitions of Fatima in 1917 to the end of the 20th century, the number of formally approved apparitions on a world scale does not reach twenty, the statement of Bishop Cardelli takes full historical weight.

The Argentine sanctuary is now a reference point for theologians and historians of religions who study the Marian phenomenon in Latin America. Its particularity - an unusually high number of apparitions, in a very specific political context, with a strong psychological profile and without material benefit - makes it a case of first order study for the theology of private apparitions.

Beyond academic analysis, what St. Nicholas defines is the experience of millions of pilgrims who have found there comfort, conversion or simply the peace they sought. In this sense, the place already performs the function that Our Lady announced in 1983: to be a source of grace for those who approach with an open heart.

Para peregrinos: The sanctuary is open every day of the year. The mass of special devotion is celebrated on the first Saturday of each month. The holiday itself is on September 25. Address: Av. del Peregrino s / n, San Nicolás de los Arroyos, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
