Bernardo Martínez
Cuapa, Nicaragua · 1980 · Seer of the Cuapa apparitions
Bernardo Martínez was a humble sacristan from Nicaragua to whom the Virgin Mary appeared during the civil war, asking for peace and conversion for a country torn apart by conflict.
His life before the apparitions
Bernardo Martínez was a simple and humble man who lived in Cuapa, a small town in the department of Chontales, in central Nicaragua. He worked as the sacristan of the local parish, responsible for keeping the church clean and preparing the altars for liturgical celebrations.
Bernardo was a man of deep but simple faith. He had no theological studies or special religious training. His life revolved around his family, his work, and his parish. He prayed the Rosary daily and attended Mass every Sunday.
In 1980, Nicaragua was embroiled in a devastating civil war between the Sandinista government and the Contras. Violence, poverty, and suffering were part of daily life for Nicaraguans.
The first appearance
On May 8, 1980, while praying the Rosary alone in the church of Cuapa, Bernardo saw a bright light fill the temple. At first, he thought it was lightning, but the light intensified and began to take human form.
A woman of extraordinary beauty, dressed in a white mantle and a crown of stars, materialized before him. The woman smiled with a sweetness that filled Bernardo with peace. He knew immediately that she was the Virgin Mary.
The Virgin Mary said to him, "Do not be afraid. I am the Mother of the God of Peace."
The messages of the Virgin
The Virgin Mary appeared to Bernardo several times between May and October 1980. The messages she conveyed to him were:
La oración: «Recen el Rosario todos los días. Es el arma más poderosa contra el mal.»
La paz: «Recen por la paz de Nicaragua. No más guerra. No más sangre.»
La conversión: «Convertíos de todo corazón. El tiempo se acaba.»
El amor: «No hagan daño a nadie. Que no haya odio entre ustedes. Ámense como hermanos.»
La Eucaristía: «Asistan a Misa todos los domingos. La Eucaristía es el alimento del alma.»
"Pray the Rosary. Pray with your heart. Do not harm anyone. Let there be no hatred among you. Love one another as brothers."

During the apparitions, several supernatural phenomena were witnessed in Cuapa:
La luz brillante: Cada vez que la Virgen aparecía, una luz brillante llenaba la iglesia y era visible desde el exterior.
El perfume de rosas: Los fieles que estaban presentes durante las apariciones reportaron un intenso perfume a rosas que llenaba el aire.
Las curaciones: Varios enfermos que rezaron durante las apariciones reportaron mejoras inexplicables en su salud.
Church approval
The apparitions at Cuapa were investigated by the Catholic Church. In 1994, the Bishop of Juigalpa, Monsignor Pablo Schmitz, officially declared the apparitions to be "supernatural and authentic."
This approval was significant because it came at a time when the Church was very cautious about Marian apparitions. The bishop based his decision on:
The consistency of the messages with Catholic doctrine. The spiritual transformation of Bernard and the faithful. The fruits of conversion and peace in the community. The absence of elements contrary to the faith.
The Sanctuary of Cuapa
Following the approval of the apparitions, a sanctuary was built in Cuapa in honor of Our Lady of Peace. The sanctuary became a place of pilgrimage for Nicaraguans and Central Americans.
Every May 8th, the anniversary of the first apparition, thousands of pilgrims flock to Cuapa to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peace. The celebration includes a procession, a solemn Mass, and a communal Rosary.
Bernardo's life after the apparitions
After the apparitions, Bernardo continued living in Cuapa, working as a sacristan and serving his parish. He never sought fame or personal gain from the apparitions.
Bernardo married and had children. He lived a simple and humble life, always available to those who came to him seeking spiritual advice or information about the apparitions.
In public statements, Bernardo always emphasized the importance of the Virgin's messages: "The Virgin didn't come looking for me. She came looking for all of you. Her message is for everyone."
The legacy of Bernardo Martínez
Bernardo Martínez's testimony is important because it demonstrates that the Virgin Mary appears to simple, humble people, not to theologians or professional mystics. Bernardo was an illiterate sacristan with no formal religious training.
The apparitions at Cuapa are also significant because they occurred in a context of war and violence. The Virgin came to bring peace to a country torn apart by conflict, reminding Nicaraguans that love and prayer are more powerful than weapons.
