The apparition of Coromoto (1651)
En 1651, el cacique Coromoto of the Cospes tribe of the Venezuelan plain was visited by an apparition as it crossed the river Tucupid. He saw a beautiful woman who urged him to be baptized. Coromoto brought the message to the Franciscan missionaries and began the process of evangelization of his tribe.
The second apparition and the canvas (8 September 1652)
On September 8, 1652, when the Cacique Coromoto had already resisted conversion and wanted to return to his customs, the woman appeared to him again in his bohio. Irritated, he tried to get her. At that time, the figure disappeared and in the hand of the cacique was a small image of the Virgin with the Child, printed in a tiny fabric of just 27 × 22 mm. terrorized by the prodigy, Coromoto was baptized.
The image
The original Coromoto canvas - 27 × 22 mm - is the smallest apparent Marian image in the world. Despite its minimum size, the image shows in detail the face of the Virgin and the Child. It has been scientifically analysed on several occasions; experts have failed to determine their manufacturing technique.
Patroness of Venezuela
Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady of Coromoto Patrona of Venezuela on October 7, 1944. The party is September 8, anniversary of the apparition of the canvas.
