Los Popas and Montserrat - From León XIII to Francisco

Each Pope since Leo XIII has had a relationship with Montserrat. Papal devotion to the Moreneta is one of the most prominent aspects of the history of the sanctuary.
Lion XIII (1878-1903) - Patronality
In 1881, Pope Leo XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat patron of Catalonia at the request of the Catalan bishops. This decision recognized a devotion that had grown for centuries.
- Lion XIIISan Pio X (1903-1914) - The consecration
Pius X promoted the consecration of Catalonia to the Virgin of Montserrat, strengthening the link between the Catalan people and their Moreneta.
Pius XI (1922-1939) - The coronation
Pius XI granted canonical coronation to the image of the Moreneta in 1931, recognizing the devotion of the Catalan people.
Saint John Paul II (1978- 2005) - The visit
— San Juan Pablo II, Montserrat, 1982San Francisco (2013-present) — Mercy

The driving thread
Each Pope has found in Montserrat something different: Leo XIII the patronality, Pius X the consecration, Pius XI the coronation, John Paul II the encounter, and Francis the mercy. Montserrat is a living sanctuary that is renewed with each generation.
