Akita's apparitions
Akita, Japan
A statue cried 101 times and a nun heard messages.
In 1973, sister Agnes Sasagawa, a deaf nun, reported that a wooden statue of the Virgin was crying. The statue shed tears on 101 occasions for several years.
The Virgin transmitted three messages to Sister Agnes, the most famous of whom she warned about a punishment of humanity if she did not repent. The bishop of Niigata investigated and authorized the veneration.
In 1988, Cardinal Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) said that events should be taken seriously, although the Holy See never issued a definitive judgment.
