Beato Benedict Daswa, mártir de Nweli

El beato Benedict Daswa, whose birth name was Tshimangadzo Samuel Daswa, was a teacher, husband, father and catechist from South Africa. The Catholic Church will venerate him as a Blessed and martyr. His memory is attached to Nweli, in Limpopo, where his remains are preserved in the church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The map offers the provincial reference of Limpopo because the cross-woven mapping does not allow to affirm the exact inner point of the temple or of the grave.

Where is he?

Nweli is located in the rural environment of Vhembe, within the South African province of Limpopo. The ecclesial sources place in the church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Nweli the tomb of Benedict Daswa and the pilgrimages that remember his life. OpenStreetMap identifies Limpopo's administrative relationship with the identifier 349547 and an HTTP 200 consultation; this representation here serves as a reference of the province, not as a coordinate of the altar and the tomb.

This caution matters. The file does not make the administrative center the exact place of the church, does not affirm a GPS position of the grave and does not present Nweli as if it were a city perfectly delimited in the cartographic source. The town and church are described in the text; the visible point retains the accuracy province so that the visitor knows what level of certainty the map offers.

Documented history

Benedict Daswa was born in 1946 and worked as a teacher and school director. The sources that describe his beatification also present him as a husband, father and collaborator of the life of the Catholic community. He participated in the catechesis, led the liturgy when it was appropriate and helped to raise the first Catholic church in the Nweli area. These data draw a Christian vocation lived in the family, the school and the parish, not only a devotional figure separated from its people.

In the southern summer of 1990, after a season of rains and storms, some local leaders wanted it to contribute financially to divination practices or to a search for perpetrators through witchcraft. Daswa refused. The reason given to him in the sources is not contempt for his community, but the conviction that a storm is a natural phenomenon and that his Christian faith did not allow him to finance a witch hunt. The fact sheet retains this concrete formulation and avoids making it a caricature of local traditions.

On 1 February 1990, he was attacked when he returned home. He died as a result of the wounds. The account of his martyrdom must remain linked to the real violence suffered by a particular man and not be used to feed contempt for a people or a culture. Beatification does not turn every detail transmitted orally into a fact proven with the same degree of certainty: the documented core is his Christian life, his refusal to participate in those practices and his violent death.

The Catholic Church beatified him on September 13, 2015 in Tshitanini. The celebration recognized his martyrdom; therefore the map uses the type beato y no Saint. Beatification allows veneration in the terms established by the Church and does not amount to a later canonization.

Tradition and Legend

The community conserves Daswa as an integral man who did not separate prayer from his responsibilities as a teacher, father and neighbor. The pilgrimages to Nweli, the prayer before his grave and the annual memory of his beatification belong to that living devotional reception. They are a way of interpreting his testimony and asking for his intercession, not an independent proof of all anecdotes that can circulate.

There is no Marian apparition linked to Benedict Daswa. The name of Our Lady of the Assumption's church explains the Marian framework of the place, but does not authorize the attribution of messages from the Virgin or supernatural phenomena. Mary is venerated and asked to intercede before Jesus Christ; worship corresponds only to God.

Ecclesial State

Benedict Daswa es Blessed and Catholic martyr. He was beatified on 13 September 2015 after the ecclesial recognition of his martyrdom. The fact sheet does not call it holy, it does not advance a canonization and does not present as approved the private devotions that may arise around its grave. The tomb of Nweli is a place of memory and prayer; the provincial coordinate of the map honestly expresses the limit of available cartography.

Anecdotes and stories

Its history brings together ordinary spaces: the classroom, the family, the school, the parish and the roads of a rural area. That is precisely why his memory does not depend on a life away from the world. The insistence of the sources in their service as a teacher and in their help to the community allows us to read martyrdom within a complete path, not as an isolated episode.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Nweli retains the relationship between her life and the community she met. The pilgrimages also remember that a tomb is not a magical object: Christians venerate the memory of the Blessed and ask for his intercession, while all grace and worship are addressed to God.

Prayer

Blessed Benedict Daswa, teacher, husband, father and martyr, pray for families, educators and those who suffer violence to remain faithful to their conscience. He asks the Virgin Mary to lead us to Jesus Christ and to teach us to reject fear, revenge and all practices that harm our neighbor. Amen.
