An emblem of popular piety that expresses trust and consecration to the love of Christ; it is not an amulet and does not guarantee automatic protection.
History and sense of devotion
The so-called Stop or Safeguard of the Sacred Heart developed within devotion to the Heart of Jesus and acquired various textile forms. Tradition relates it to the desire, witnessed in the surroundings of St. Margaret Mary, to honor the image of the Heart of Christ in the homes and upon the person. His later history includes popular and military uses that must be presented without identifying the Christian faith with any political cause.
What does it mean?
The phrase "Stop! The Heart of Jesus is with me" is an invocation of trust. The object can be blessed, but its spiritual fruit depends on faith, conversion and sacramental life. It does not act by its own force.
Christian use
It can be taken discreetly as a memory of Christ's love and a commitment to live according to the Gospel. There is no pontifical promise of physical immunity linked to the emblem.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust you. Stop sin in me and make me an instrument of your peace. Amen.
