Water blessed with great solemnity on the day of Theophany, with prayers of exorcism, to drink and sprinkle the homes.

Documented history and memory received

On January 6, the feast of the Theophany (the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, "manifestation" of the Trinity), the Eastern Churches celebrate the Great Blessing of Water with prayers of exorcism and invocation of the Holy Spirit, sometimes immersing a cross into a river or ice-cold source. The orients have it for much more than ordinary holy water: the faithful drink it with reverence (often in fasting), keep it all year round, and the priest walks through the houses of the community by sprinkling every corner, to sanctify the homes and to remove all influence from the evil. Remember that Christ sanctified the waters by being baptized.

Who venerates the memory

The look is directed to Jesus Christ and to the mystery of his Incarnation, Passion, Death, Resurrection or Reign. The image, relic, monument or custom does not act by its own power: it serves the memory of the Gospel and leads to prayer, sacraments, conversion and charity.

History, tradition and discernment

The blessing of water belongs to the liturgy of Theophany. Drink it and sprinkle homes are ecclesial practices; no automatic physical effects are promised or water is presented as amulet. The tab retains the memory received without turning legend, witness or believing interpretation into a historically demonstrated fact.

Celebration and devotional life
