The Lusophone Marian heritage in Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau, a small West African nation with a strong Portuguese heritage, has a Catholic community that comprises approximately 20% of the population. Portuguese evangelization began in the 15th century, but it wasn't until the 19th century that Franciscan and Holy Spirit missionaries established permanent missions. The Virgin Mary was introduced to the Balanta, Fulani, and Mandinka peoples under the title of Our Lady of Fatima, a major Portuguese Marian devotion. The Diocese of Bissau, established in 1977, is based at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima, built in 1954 with a design that blends Portuguese colonial architecture with African elements.
The civil war of 1998-1999 devastated the country, but Marian devotion remained strong. The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, present in the country since the 1960s, have been instruments of Marian devotion through their work in schools and hospitals. In the town of Cuntum Madina Nhoma, on the outskirts of Bissau, the sisters run a Marian center where the faithful come to pray the Rosary and participate in spiritual retreats. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima (May 13) is celebrated with great solemnity throughout the country, with processions through the streets of Bissau and the inland villages, in which the image of the Virgin is carried on a platform accompanied by songs in Portuguese and Creole.
Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Bolama
On the island of Bolama, the former capital of Portuguese Guinea, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption stands as a silent witness to colonial history. Built in 1870 by the Portuguese, the neoclassical church was once one of the grandest in West Africa. Today, though partially in ruins, the church is still used by the local Catholic community for Marian celebrations. Every August 15, the faithful from the Bijagós Islands make a pilgrimage by canoe to Bolama for the Mass of the Assumption, a tradition dating back to the 19th century. The image of Our Lady of the Assumption, an 18th-century Portuguese carving, is venerated as the protector of the archipelago's fishermen and sailors.

Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Bafatá
In Bafatá, the country's second-largest city and capital of the Bafatá region, the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary serves a Catholic community composed primarily of Fulani and Mandinka ethnic groups. The church, built in 1962 by Portuguese Franciscan missionaries, is a simple yet welcoming building with adobe walls and a corrugated iron roof. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary, a wooden carving from Guinea, was crafted by a local artisan in the 1970s and depicts the Virgin Mary with African features, dressed in capulana fabric (a traditional textile from Mozambique and Guinea). Every October 7th, the community celebrates the patron saint's feast day with drum music and traditional dances.
