Marian devotion in the Republic of Kiribati
Kiribati, a country of 33 atolls scattered along the equator in the Central Pacific, was evangelized by the missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the late 19th century. Catholicism was deeply rooted in the islands of the equatorial line, especially in Tarawa, Abaiang and Nonouti. The Virgin Mary is venerated under the title of the Sacred Heart, an advocation that the missionaries introduced as part of her foundational charism. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in South Tarawa, built in 1960 with coral and cement, is the center of the diocese of Tarawa and Nauru. Every 7 October, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated with special devotion, as the Rosary was the first prayer that the missionaries taught the islanders.
The Marian history of Kiribati is marked by the heroic work of the missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who were traveling in atoll gulet in atoll carrying the faith. On May 10, 1888, the first missionaries landed in Nonouti, and the first mass held on the island was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Kiribatí oral tradition retains the account of how the islanders, seeing the image of the Sacred Heart of Mary, exclaimed "Te Atua Maria!" (God Mary!), initiating a devotion that has been transmitted to this day. Gilbertese culture, with its strong emphasis on community and respect for the elderly, found in Mary a perfect model of the "kain te aomata" (family person), and the prayer of the Rosary was naturally integrated into the daily life of the villages.
Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro de Abaiang
En el atolón de Abaiang, al norte de Tarawa, la parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro es una de las más activas de Kiribati. La catedral del Sagrado Corazón en Tarawa Sur sirve como centro espiritual para ambas naciones.
