In late 1732, before and after the earthquake that affected Scala on November 29, religious and faithful claimed to see signs of the Passion in the host exposed in the monastery.

History and context

The magazine of the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de 'Tirreni places the event in the initial months of the Redemptorist foundation. During several exhibitions of the Most Holy they would have seen successively the nails, the hammer, the crown of thorns, the spear, a bloody scale and a mountain with a dark cross. The publication relates those signs to the emblem adopted later by the Redemptorist institutes.

What makes it possible to state the documentation

The diocesan source documents the contemporary reception of this memory and its monastic context. There is no claim that there is a transformed form or material examination today. The old index of the Acutis exhibition misuses the file of San Pedro Damian; this tab is supported for Scala in the correct diocesan source.

Place on the map

The marker points Monastery of the Redemptorists · Scala. When the exact physical point of the episode is not known, the tab uses the temple or locality that conserves its memory and declares it without pretending to be non-existent.

Spiritual feeling

The Catholic faith in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist does not depend on accepting an extraordinary phenomenon. This memory invites reverent worship, participation in Mass, reconciliation and charity, never curiosity or superstition.

Para orar

Lord Jesus, living bread and humble presence among us, strengthen our faith, purify our heart and make Eucharistic worship bear fruit of peace, conversion and service. Amen.
