In the second quarter of the 16th century, the young parish of Standdabruiten had an object called "worthy Holy Sacrament of the Miracles." Two administrative references show that it was sought by faithful from various parishes and comarcas. However, the texts do not explain what phenomenon would have given rise to worship.

A parish born on land won by water

The parish of St. John the Baptist was erected in 1526, shortly after the drying and organization of the grounds of Standdabruiten. The church was raised at the initiative of the Lord of Bergen op Zoom and was consecrated in 1549. The Eucharistic cult therefore appears in a community of recent foundation and before even the building was finished.

What the 1534 and 1543 documents say

A 1534 account mentions the Sacrament of Miracle. In 1543, the Joh administrator. Vrientschap defended the continuation of the church's works because any delay would harm the venerated Sacrament there guarded, visited by many people from different parishes and territories.

These phrases demonstrate three facts: there was a locally recognized Eucharistic object, attracted visitors from outside and was linked to the support of the church. They do not describe a bleeding host, a preserved form of fire or a material transformation. Add any of those details would be to make a story that sources do not contain.

It wasn't the Sacrament of Niervart.

Some authors wondered whether the object could be the famous Sacrament of Niervaart, preserved in Breda. The chronology and sources of the Breda fellowship indicate that he had been moved there in 1449. Meertens concludes that Standdabruiten must have had a cult of his own, even if his origin remains unknown.

Wars, religious changes and memory loss

The region suffered from the clashes of the Dutch Revuelta. By 1570 the parish house and probably part of the temple were destroyed. In 1648 the church passed to Protestant worship and Catholics celebrated for years in a clandestine church. There is no data that will allow the ancient Sacrament of Miracle to be followed safely after the 16th century.

The original building was replaced in the 19th century and again in 1924-1925. The current church was damaged during World War II, repaired and finally decacralized in 2013. The solar retains topographic continuity, not continuity of object or pilgrimage.

An absence that must also be counted

Historical honesty does not force every vacuum to be filled. At Standdabruiten it is valuable to know that there was a documented regional cult and at the same time to recognize that we ignore the original episode, the aspect of the object, its destiny and the scope of any ecclesial discernment.

The Eucharistic faith does not depend on a prodigy

The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist belongs to the sacramental celebration of the Church and does not depend on accepting an extraordinary account. These historical memories help when they lead to mass, worship, reconciliation, ecclesial communion and charity. That is why the documents, the religious interpretation of their time and what can no longer be verified are distinguished.

Market 25, stand outside. The marker corresponds to the historical site of the parish; the current building is decacralized and does not preserve the old object.

Prayer

Jesus, true bread, give us a devotion united to the truth. Teach us to recognize with humility what we know, not to invent what we ignore and to always meet you in the Eucharist and in the brothers. Amen.
