Reflection for each day of the ninth

First Day · Glory of the Most Holy Trinity

Del Evangelio de san Lucas 1, 49: "The Mighty has done great works for me: his name is holy."

God makes himself known to men by showing them their glory, and "the glory of God" is an expression that is used in the Bible to designate the great works that the Most High does for men, or their prodigious manifestations.

In Jesus, particularly in his death and resurrection, the glory of God the Father is manifested; and by becoming obedient to death, and death on the cross, Christ Jesus glorifies him. This gesture of glorification reaches Christians, and the Virgin Mary is the first to benefit: full of the Holy Spirit, she is made a wife of God the Father and mother of her only-begotten Son.

In the Virgin all is beautiful, for in her is the glory of God. In the Virgin, in giving birth to the Savior of the world, the Most Holy Trinity was pleased to reveal the splendor of its glory.

Second Day · Mother of those who are of Christ

Del Evangelio de san Juan 19, 25-27: Next to the cross of Jesus was his mother, his mother's sister, Mary, Cleophas, and Mary the Magdalene. Jesus, seeing his mother and, near, the disciple whom he loved so much, said to his mother, "Woman, there is your son." Then he said to the disciple, "There's your mother." From that hour, the disciple received it in his house.

By faith and baptism, the Christian is a member of the mystical body of Christ, who is the Church; and he is born from the side of Jesus, new Adam, "asleep" on the tree of the cross. To the Church Jesus says, as Adam once told Eve, "You are a bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh."

Mary is the Virgin Mother of the Lord, and Jesus, at the birth of Mary, has become our brother; Mary is our Mother, for we are, by baptism, members of the Body of her Son.

On the cross, the Virgin received from her Son Jesus Christ a maternal commission: to be the mother of those who are of Christ. It's our turn to welcome her to the house of our life.

Third Day · Clean Source of Faith

Del Evangelio de san Lucas 1, 39.43-45: At that time, Mary was on her way and went quickly to the mountain, to a people of Judah; she entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth... Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said with a voice, "Blessed are you, who have believed! for what the Lord has said to you will be fulfilled."

Faith is a gift of God, and it springs from the preaching of the Word. "How will they believe," says Paul, "if no one preaches them?" Mary is the best of the listeners, for she put her faith in the Word of God who heard from the angel's mouth.

The Word heard in it became flesh. Jesus, a blessed fruit of his womb, a word heard and believed, was always for her a great mystery, savoured by a sodomy meditation.

The Virgin, a clean source of faith, draws for us a believing path.

Fourth Day · Our Lady always prays

Del Evangelio de san Lucas 1, 46-47: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit is glad in God my savior."

Mary is the Our Lady always praying, for she constantly observes and meditates on the life of her Son.

From his heart came a song of praise when he visited his cousin Elizabeth. She, with her soul raised to the Lord, gives her thanks constantly.

He supplies his Son Jesus Christ, as he did at another time in Cana of Galilee, that man should never lack the joy that comes from God and that comes to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

She teaches us to be before the Lord in an attitude of constant availability and obedience, so that the Mighty may surround us with the "arms" of his tenderness.

Fifth Day · Triunfator of evil

From the book of Judith 9, 10-11: "Destroy, O Lord, through a woman, her arrogance. Because your power does not depend on the number, nor on the value of men your strength."

There is no greater and worse evil than sin, and there is no greater victory than that which was carried out on the cross, since in it sin was defeated by the love of Jesus.

On the cross, the Son of Mary is shown as Lord who overcomes sin and death through his death and subsequent resurrection. Thanks to them, the Lord opens for us the way that leads to life.

With him, in Calvary, is Mary, offering herself with her Son for the salvation of the world. She, from the cross, tells us: "Come and see" Jesus, consecrated by the Holy Spirit, who is a visible image of the God who is not seen. "Come and listen" to Jesus, who is the Word and Wisdom of God, by whom God the Father created all things. "Come and eat" Jesus, who is the Bread of Life that gives life to the world.

Day 6 · Consuelo of our life

Del Evangelio de san Lucas 2, 15-17: The shepherds said to one another, "Let us go to Bethlehem..." and they found Mary and Joseph, and the child cast into the manger.

The life of man is subject to many difficulties, which are sometimes for him a cause of suffering. God the Father is not insensitive to our weeping, and in Him is a desire to comfort.

The comfort of God is Christ, born of the Virgin, who forgives our guilt and heals our diseases. Christ is the head of the Church, and the Church is the Holy City of God. Mary is the image and figure of the Church: in her God the Son stood.

The Church gives us Christ through the sacraments, as in the past the Virgin gave us in the poverty of our flesh.

The Church and Mary comfort man by giving Jesus, in whom we find the joy and peace that spring from his resurrection. He constantly tells us, "Those who are tired and overwhelmed, come to me."

Day 7 · The Church's safe guide

Of the Acts of the Apostles 1, 14: They all dedicated themselves to prayer in common, together with some women, including Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The Virgin Mary has walked the ways of faith, which are of trust and abandonment in the Word of God, which she always welcomed as light on the path of her life; and therefore she already enjoys the glory of God, on whose right she stands, as a precious queen. Assigned to heaven, it is for the Church a sign of sure hope.

The passage of man through this world is called to end well: in the lap of God. The Church, eager to be with Christ, follows the steps of the Virgin in order to reach the glorification that corresponds to her as the body that is the Son of Mary. Mary is the star that announces the day and that, because this day is all of God, she knows no sunset.

8th Day · Star of Evangelization

Of the Acts of the Apostles 1, 8: Jesus said to them, "When the Holy Spirit descends upon you, you will receive strength to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria and even to the ends of the world."

The Lord entrusted a task to his disciples: to make the Gospel known. Evangelization is essential in the making of the Church, and it appears before the world as the place where the prayer that springs from love is lived.

The Gospel that is proclaimed becomes a reality in everyone who receives it with faith.

Mary believed in the incarnation of the Son of God in her bosom by the work of the Holy Spirit, as it was announced by the angel; she celebrated it with her song; she brought it into her bosom to her cousin Elizabeth, whose son jumped out of joy in her bowels by capturing the presence of the Saviour.

To believe, celebrate and proclaim Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, is the path that the Virgin Mother offers to the Church, and to every one of us who is part of it, in order for men to come to faith.

9th Day · Beginning of a New World

From the book of Revelation 21, 1-2: I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth have passed, and the sea no longer exists. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from heaven, sent by God, arranged as a bride who adorns herself for her husband.

To everyone who believes in Jesus, the son of Mary, as Savior and Lord through his death and resurrection, he fills with joy the knowledge that the life of those who are his by faith and baptism does not end with death: it is transformed. The Christian knows that in the Eucharistic communion he has received throughout his life he has eaten the Life that does not end: Christ Jesus.

The Virgin, Mother of the Lord, constantly invites us to approach her, that we may be filled with the precious fruit of her womb, which is Jesus Christ.

In it begins a new world, for it brought into its bosom the One who, through his death and resurrection, makes everything new.
